Cycle Touring England 15th-June-2017

Kings Sedgemoor Drain

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Thursday 15th-June-2017. Staywell to Bridgwater and Back. 14 miles. The whole purpose of coming on this little tour was to get Passepartout serviced and while it gives me a good excuse to get away, it’s a bit of a bore having to hang around on the day of service!

Knowing that the service was going to take a few hours, I went for a wander around Bridgwater, which didn’t take long at all! So I decided to go and have breakfast in the local Wetherspoons. As it’s cheap and you get free coffee refills!

After eating the breakfast, which I must say was excellent value I decided to stay and abuse the free wifi in the comfort of a pub! I hasten to add that not one drop of alcohol passed my lips; I just had coffee!

As I sat there people-watching, I started to get more and more wound up! Now I know that I’m not exactly Mr slim or Mr healthy. But the size of some of the people that come in and the crap that is thrown down their throats is unbelievable! No wonder this country has a weight and health problem! At least I do try!

The final straw came when some fat thing (a female, I think). She was in her twenties with one child in a pushchair. And another child of about eight. She came in and ordered a huge burger and chips for herself and also for the older child, who wasn’t very skinny either! She was also feeding the child in the pushchair with the same rubbish! They even had some huge calorific dessert! But the worst thing of all was the child bragging to somebody else that he’d been excluded from all schools, and all his mum could do was laugh and play on the fruit machine! And I bet she was on benefits! Time for Mr Grumpy to leave!

Luckily, not long after leaving, Passepartout was ready. And I was soon Mr Happy again, or as happy as I get!

It’s always nice after the bike has been serviced, as it feels like riding a new bike! Looking forward to getting back on the road and heading home tomorrow.

Cycle Touring England 14th-June-2017

Longleat House

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Wednesday, 14th-June-2017. Salisbury to Staywell. 62 miles.  It’s been another lovely day again today, although I’ve not been able to follow the cycle routes quite as much as I did yesterday.

I started the day off following the NCN45 from Salisbury which followed the river Wylye to Warminster then takes you through Longleat forest and then past Longleat safari park and house.

After that, I got a bit bored following cycle routes and besides none really went the way I wanted to go so I got on the main A361, which was rather busy!

I stayed on the main road as far as Glastonbury where once again I found another cycle route, the NCN3 which brought me more or less to my campsite.

Although I’ve only cycled 62 miles today, I didn’t reach the campsite until well after six. But with the light evenings at this time of year, it doesn’t really matter, with it staying light until about 10 o’clock!

You Can’t Go Anywhere

Met a couple on the campsite from my old home town of Aylesbury, where I grew up. And even though they were a good ten years older than me, they went to the same high school as me, Quarrendon and had a lot of the same teachers as I did, Mr Wood, Mr Hill and Daber Davies! I think she said that they are all dead now which isn’t really a surprise as it was 40 years ago!

Bognor pier

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Tuesday, 13th-June-2017. Bognor Regis to Salisbury. 78 miles. Finally, I’ve managed to get away somewhere else apart from the New Forest or Isle of Wight! Although it’s not exactly a new destination it will make a change.

I’m en route to Bridgwater and St John Street Cycles for a long overdue service and repair to Passepartout.

I was meant to go a few weeks ago. But I had to go into hospital for that angiogram, so I was unable to. But at least I’m on my way now, and it feels really good to be back touring.

It’s been a lovely ride today the weather has been superb and I’ve been following cycle routes all the way, which have taken me through small villages and quiet country lanes.

The only downside to the day was when I reached the campsite and unpacked. In one of my panniers, a can of beer had burst and emptied itself all over my spare clothes and maps! And there was me trying to be clever and bringing enough clothes, so I didn’t have to do any washing! Still, at least they smell nice now!!
