Cycle Touring England Monday 30th-May-2016

Garry McGivern is cycle touring  England on Monday 30th-May-2016. Crowborough to Bognor Regis. 67 miles. Nice early start this morning. I was on the road by 6.30, which was mainly due to the insomnia I’m experiencing at the moment due to the steroids I’m taking! But it’s also so light in the mornings at this time of year. I always like to go cycling when the days are long.

As I sat in my tent last night, I heard another cyclist pull up next to me and pitch his tent, so I thought I’d go and have a chat. To see where he’s going and where he’s come from. I just thought that I’d let him get settled in first. Just as well I did. As I sat in my tent, I could hear the conversation that he was having with some of the people that walked by. They were also intrigued to know what he was doing. All I heard him say was that he’d come from Kent. But hadn’t gone very far today as he’d got an upset stomach and hadn’t been able to keep anything in all day, lovely! Needless to say, I gave him a wide berth and never bothered to go and speak to him. I just hid in my tent!

Somewhere Different

The ride home was pretty windy, but luckily, it was mainly on my back. I came home in a bit of a roundabout way so I could cycle somewhere different and ended up on the Downs Link, which links the North Downs and the South Downs. It was really pleasant.

I arrived home at about 2 pm.

Cycle Touring England Sunday 29th-May-2016

Garry McGivern is cycle touring in England on Sunday 29th-May-2016. Horam to Crowborough. 16 miles. Ha ha! Talk about not proofreading things, it’s a seventieth birthday party I’ve come to not a seventh as I said yesterday!

I didn’t rush to get up this morning as knew I didn’t have far to go. And then, when I did get up, I was just milling around the campsite. That was until all the children started to get up and were running around the tent again. I soon packed up and left then! I cycled down the road into Horam and went and had a nice fry-up at the cafe there which was full of bikers.

After breakfast, I had a really pleasant ride following the Cuckoo Trail, which is part of Avenue Verte, the London to Paris cycle route. Everybody was so friendly saying good morning even a couple of the lycra brigade managed a hello, although I did speak first! After spending the afternoon at this party I decided to stay at the campsite in Crowborough and head home tomorrow. Photos; along the Cuckoo trail, which is a disused railway line.

Cycle Touring England Saturday 28th-May-2016

Garry McGivern is cycle touring in England on Saturday 28th-May-2016. Bognor Regis to Horam. 58 miles. I’m off to a seventh birthday party tomorrow in Crowborough. So I decided to cycle there and make a bit of a weekend of it. After all, it’s a bank holiday on Monday.

Under cliff path
The undercliff cycle route between Brighton and Rottingdean.

I had a bit of a stop-go ride this morning while I waited out a couple of thunderstorms to clear. There wasn’t any point in getting wet. I knew I didn’t have that far to go today. And it was quite a loud thunderstorm in Brighton, I think it was right overhead. But once it had cleared, the rest of the day was lovely and sunny, albeit a bit windy!

Camped at a hideous campsite tonight there are loads of children running around all over the place, and they keep tripping over my guy ropes. I’ve shouted at a couple of them! I was going to hang around the campsite for a while in the morning, seeing as I don’t have to be in Crowborough until midday. But after tonight, I think I’ll be off at first light!

Cycle Touring England Sunday 15th-May-2016

Garry McGivern is cycle touring England on Sunday, 15th-May-2016. A weekend ride to Winchester and back. I decided to go on a cycle ride to Winchester and back this weekend. After all, I’ve been working nearly every day for the past month or so. So, I thought I’d make the most of my time off.

I must admit this weekend off was forced upon me, though. I seem to have got my cellulitis back again! This time in my lower left leg. It’s been hurting me since Wednesday and has been rather swollen. But I didn’t give it much thought as it wasn’t worrying me! But on Friday morning, after getting up and making my lunch box for work, I started to feel ill. So much so that I decided not to work and went to see the doctor instead!

Not Again

I managed to get an early appointment, and he took one look at my leg, felt how hot it was and said that I had cellulitis again! Great, I thought I’d only just gotten rid of the last lot! But looking on the bright side, at least I’ve not been hospitalised this time! I was given antibiotics and told to rest it and try to keep the weight off it but keep moving it. So I thought the best way to keep the weight off it and to keep moving was to go on a cycle ride! Hence the ride to Winchester (I don’t need much of an excuse!)

The ride up to Winchester was pretty uneventful, and I arrived at the hotel by three. After checking in and making sure that I could get a room. I went straight back out to have a look around the city centre, using my bike as normal as a Zimmer frame!

I thought that Winchester was a rather pretty and busy place. There was a market taking place on the high street and on a green next to the cathedral there was a free music concert and some art exhibition.

Bored with looking around, I went back to the hotel, showered and went straight down to the bar! Down at the bar, I got swamped by a load of old people who were also staying at the hotel! It was a group of retired bankers calling themselves the 1818 Society who met up on a regular basis. They were a jolly bunch, and I enjoyed listening to them. They were talking about their times back in the sixties when they were working in some South American country or out in Africa. How different all those countries must have been back then.

Sunday

Breakfast this morning was exciting. The retired bankers were all there and talking about their ailments, prostrate trouble, bladder trouble. I fitted in well! Not that I have any of those, but I do seem to have a few ailments myself these days!

It was a good ride home following one of the national cycle routes (no23) to Southampton, then my regular cycle route home via National Route 2 to Portsmouth and then the main road back.

Total miles covered this weekend: 111.
