Bike-Ride to Australia 11th-May-2012

Garry McGivern’s bike-ride to Australia Friday 11th-May-2012. In Brisbane. Today, mum and dad! I mean, Zoe and Errol took me to the Steve Irwin zoo, which is about forty miles north of Brisbane. What a great place, you can get really close to the animals. I’ve held a koala, fed the kangaroos and was also able to sit with them. I also fed the elephants and stroked a snake. The zookeeper did give me the option of holding the snake, but I declined!

Finally I’ve seen a koala

We went to the Crocoseum to watch the “Wildlife Warrior” show at midday. With its mixture of snakes, birds and crocodiles. Parrots, condors, and vultures fly around the arena just above your head. Then the first crocodile enters the arena, swimming in from the side of the pool that dominates the stadium’s centre. It’s only a baby croc, about two feet long. Then the next crocodile enters the pool, and he’s not small. He’s about ten feet long! The zookeepers get him to move around the pool by stamping their feet at the water’s edge. They also get him to leap out of the water and take some food from the handler standing on a platform above the water.

What a brilliant place and a great legacy to Steve Irwin; we had a great day. And whether you’re old or young, it’s well worth a visit, and I would certainly return.
