Garry McGivern’s cycling around the world, Friday, 28th-September-2012, Bauyzhau Momyshuly to Lugovoy. 108 miles. I met a German cyclist today cycling in the opposite direction to me, which is the first cyclist I’ve seen since arriving in Kazakhstan. He was heading to Uzbekistan to spend the winter in Tashkent. I don’t think he has any real destination as he’s been travelling for the past four years. It was nice to talk with him. He spoke excellent English.
Speaking of Uzbekistan, I’m cycling very close to the border. The only thing that separates us is a mountain range, which I’m glad I don’t have to cross. I’m pretty sure I can see snow on the higher peaks.
Campsites
I must try and stop before it gets dark. I keep camping in some rather unpleasant places. On Wednesday, when I stopped, I thought I was away from the road but found myself next to a busy track with vehicles going up and down all night. I was fine as I was behind some trees. But I didn’t get a huge amount of sleep. And this morning, when I woke up, I found that I’d pitched my tent next to a dog’s skeleton. Well, I think it’s a dog, lovely!
I don’t think I’m in a much better place tonight. It’s rather noisy. I can hear a lot of building going on, and the air is thick with dust. And I realised after pitching my tent that I seem to be on a trail that is used by cattle. Hopefully, I’ll be long gone tomorrow before they come through. They don’t move cattle at night, do they?
It’s been a nice easy ride today on new roads and relatively flat. And I’ve also just passed 30,000 kilometres of cycling since leaving home. Surely that deserves some more donations to my charities, please?
