On This Day 28th-July-2014

This week’s on this day post comes from the 28th-July-2014, and I’m in England. It’s good to see that I was indecisive even back then.

Monday 28th July. Highbridge to Cheltenham. 89 miles.

It started to spit with rain this morning just as I was taking my tent down. But luckily, I managed to de-camp and load my bike up before it came to anything. Once loaded, I quickly rode off to get ahead of the rain. There’s been plenty of black clouds around all day, but thankfully I never saw any rain apart from those few spots first thing!

I went on a detour to Cheddar Gorge this morning after leaving camp, not that I had any idea of where I was going anyway! So it wasn’t really a detour. Although I was thinking that I might head to Wales. Anyway, detour or not, it was well worth a visit.

Deep gorge
Cheddar Gorge

I started at the bottom of the gorge where the village of Cheddar is; I wasn’t very impressed. There were loads of tourist shops selling the usual tourist tack. But luckily, they soon petered out, and I got to see the natural beauty of this deep gorge with its sides of limestone rock reaching up to the sky with mountain goats standing precariously on little ledges. Who knows how they get there or even how they get off? But they must somehow! There was, however, a lot of rubbish around!

Now Where

I managed to find my way around Bristol without too much difficulty, although the route I took was very industrial and not very pleasant. On the ride to Bristol, I’d decided that I was going to go to Wales. I could visit my relatives. Who lived near Cardiff. So I had to cross River Severn via the Severn Bridge.

Once across the bridge and in Wales, I decided to get something to eat. So I made my way to the nearest town, which was Chepstow. The only trouble was that Chepstow was down a big hill. And one that I certainly didn’t fancy cycling back up. So I scrapped the Welsh idea and headed towards Cheltenham, where I’m staying tonight. I might stay here two nights and decide what direction to go tomorrow as I can’t decide just now.
