Morocco Bicycle Tour

April 2009

It was early in 2009 and Garry had spent most of the winter working, but now things had quietened down a bit he turned his attention to going on another tour, but where could he go?

The choice was vast as there were so many countries that Garry wanted to see! In the end, he chose Morocco as it was possibly the most diverse and different country to England that was also relatively close, so Garry wouldn’t have to fly, He hadn’t the confidence of taking his bike on a plane!

Garry caught the ferry from Portsmouth to Spain and Santander where he would start his tour.

His idea was to get trains through Spain down to Algeciras where he would then get a ferry across to Morocco; unfortunately, he couldn’t get a direct train to Algeciras as he was only allowed on the regional trains. The fast trains didn’t allow bikes on them! But it was all part of the adventure!

Garry’s journey through Spain took him five days, and at one point he got turfed off the train in the middle of nowhere due to rail works! Garry was left stranded without a map not knowing where he was!

Eventually, Garry found his way to Algeciras where he caught the ferry to Morocco.

As Garry disembarked the ferry and made his way out of the port the sights and sounds all became a bit too much for him, suddenly Garry went from the calm of the harbour into the hustle and bustle of North Africa!

There were cars, bikes and people coming at him from every direction there didn’t appear to be any law on the road it was just a free for all! Buses came past churning out thick black smoke with young children running behind them try to catch a lift by clinging on to the back of them!

Garry was in Africa, and had a case of culture shock!

Despite that initial shock Garry cycled on and cycled down as far as Marrakesh, and over the Atlas Mountains, He was taken in by strangers when there were no hotels and found nothing but warmth and friendship from the Moroccan people.

After cycling around Morocco and back up to Tangiers Garry got the ferry back to Spain.

He had intended to cycle back home going around the coast and coming up through Portugal, but unfortunately, Garry had a problem with his rear wheel causing him to abandon the tour, leaving his bike at a friends villa in Portugal while he flew home!

Garry could have taken his bike back home with him but A; because Garry wasn’t confident enough to fly with his bike and B; by leaving it down in Portugal would mean that he would have to return!

Total miles cycled 1479.
