Cycling The World Azerbaijan 10th-August-2012

Garry McGivern’s cycling around the world, Friday 10th-August-2012 Tbilisi, Georgia to Qazax, Azerbaijan. 66 miles. Well, I had wanted to get on the road nice and early today. Just in case there were any hold-ups at the Azerbaijan border. But I couldn’t get out of the hotel. They’d locked the doors, and I had to wait for the manager to turn up before I could get on the road.

I was right about hold-ups at the border. Leaving Georgia went okay, but when I got to the Azerbaijan border, I got pushed from one window to another. Then back again to the first window. It was all very annoying, but eventually, I got the stamp in my passport and was allowed into Azerbaijan. Country number twenty-one.

At the Azerbaijan border

I don’t think beer will be as easy to come by as it was in Georgia. Azerbaijan is a predominately Muslim country.! But after saying that, I’ve seen quite a few bars. Although I am still fairly close to the border. We’ll see as I get further into the country! I hope Ramadan has finished.

My first impressions of Azerbaijan are that the people are very friendly. Nearly everybody I’ve passed has smiled and waved. Even people in cars have been tooting and waving! Turkey and Georgia were the same; they were also constantly on their horns. But it was more of a get out of the way. I’m coming through blast! And as for the speeds in Georgia, I don’t think they had any speed limits, or if they did, nobody took any notice. It was a bit like being back in India!

Please Donate

Don’t forget the main reason behind my ride. I want to raise as much money for cancer research charities as possible. After my wife, Josie, died of breast cancer in 2007, aged only 42. Even the smallest donation helps. You can donate to Cancer Research UK or the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation. Click on either one to donate. Every little bit helps to rid the world of this cruel disease.
