Bike-Ride to Australia-and-Beyond 1st-July-2012

Garry McGivern’s bike-ride to Australia-and-beyond Sunday, 1st-July-2012 Jersey City to New York. 22 miles. I left the hotel this morning in a lot of pain, my head was killing me, and my body ached. It was a nervous ride, every time a car came past me, I braced myself, waiting to be hit, which thankfully never came.

That’ll be that there New York

Luckily, with my forced stop, I found a cycle-friendly route into New York, which took me away from busy roads. And with the help of some other cyclists, I found my way to my hotel relatively easy. I’d already figured that I needed to cross over to New York via the George Washington Bridge. But that was about it. Luckily, I met some local cyclists while crossing the bridge, who took me to a quieter road. Then, all I had to do was count down the street numbers until I reached 48th Street, where my hotel was.

Every bump on that road today hurt, even the smallest. It seemed to jar my whole body. I was glad it was only a short ride, and I was happy to finish. There was nowhere to keep my bike at the hotel, so they allowed me to take it to my room. The room wasn’t the biggest, but a bike shop was just around the corner from the hotel, where I got a box to pack my bike into. I managed to get the bike into the box this afternoon, which has given me a bit more room. I’ll pack it away properly later. I’m in too much pain now.

Please Donate

Don’t forget the main reason behind my ride. I want to raise as much money for cancer research charities as possible. After my wife, Josie, died of breast cancer in 2007, aged only 42. Even the smallest donation helps. You can donate to Cancer Research UK or the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation. Click on either one to donate. Every little bit helps to rid the world of this cruel disease.
