Sunday 21st July. Ballina to Sligo. 38 Miles.

Not wanting to dwell on the past, but a year ago to the day I was admitted into hospital in excruciating pain and the start of my battle with sepsis!

Man on life support
Sedated in intensive care last year

Now one year on, I’m not completely convinced I’m over it all, or maybe I am, it’s just I’m getting old!

Despite it being a pretty crap day weather wise, I’m just so grateful to still be here and to be able to tour on my bike! I am one lucky guy!

Man in rain
I’d rather be here in the rain, than where I was this time last year!

And I certainly wouldn’t have been here without all the doctors and nurses at St Richard’s hospital Chichester. And all my family and friends who gave me such support. I think it was probably worse for you! I was fine, I was away with the fairies on a ferry to Morocco!

Man with pint of Guinness
A pint to celebrate

Stopped early today in a hotel, no fun cycling in the wind and rain! Tomorrow looks a bit dodgy on the weather front, but after that it’s meant to be good!

  1. Shame about the weather – It’s so hot here I had to have a siesta. Well, that’s amazing. You should be in the Guiness book of records he! he! I’ve been cycling for 70 years in Europe and the UK but I can’t match your record. With your mileage you could go round Ireland three times.
    Best wishes – Malc.
