Kazakhstan, Cycling The World 30th-September-2012

Garry McGivern’s cycling around the world, Sunday, 30th-September-2012, Belbasar to who knows where. 93 miles. My guard dog Chester was still sitting outside my tent when I woke up this morning. Which I thought was rather nice, but what do I do now? As much as he is a lovely dog, I can’t take him with me, and I do wonder if he belongs to somebody as he looks in good condition.

In the end, once I’d packed up, I gave him some biscuits and peddled as fast as I could so he couldn’t follow me. I cycled briskly for a good half hour or so before I turned around to see if he was following me. Luckily it seemed to work, as I never saw him again. I do hope he does belong to somebody; he was so lovely.

Looking forward to a nice downhill ride

I’ve had loads of rain today, and it’s felt pretty cold! And because of the rain, I spent a lot of time sheltering in a café. The other people, whom I assume were truck drivers, were trying to get me to join them in drinking vodka. But I was a good boy and resisted.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the number of miles I’ve cycled today. I thought it would have been a lot less, considering the stops I’ve had. And I spent nearly two hours drudging up some mountain. The day finished well, coming down the mountain with a nice tailwind. And the only reason I stopped was because it was getting dark! I hope to reach Almaty tomorrow, where I’ll take a few days off.

Don’t forget the main reason behind my ride. I want to raise as much money for cancer research charities as possible. After my wife, Josie, died of breast cancer in 2007, aged only 42. Even the smallest donation helps. You can donate to Cancer Research UK or the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation. Click on either one to donate. Every little bit helps to rid the world of this cruel disease.
