Bicycle Touring Iberia: Portugal, Porto To Campos | Travelsonabike2

Cycling Iberia, Portugal: Porto to Campos

My latest bicycle touring update: cycling in Iberia, Portugal. Porto to Campos. 72 miles. Another hard day with a strong headwind! This morning was fine, and I was making good progress. I found my way out of Porto without any problem at all. But then I shouldn’t really have any issues. I use the GPS and route finder on my phone these days. It’s so much easier and saves going miles in the wrong direction! It does take a bit of the fun and unknown aspect away, but it’s certainly a lot easier and less stressful!

A Tough Day

As I said, I’ve had a strong headwind today. And I had wanted to get as far as Vigo in Spain and stop there for the night. It was pretty slow and hard going with the wind, but I got to Caminha, where there’s a ferry that crosses the Rio Mino to Spain. When I turned up, I saw the ferry was in port, but there weren’t any vehicles waiting. So I assumed I had a little while before it left and went into town to get some water and food. After I’d got my supplies, I went back to the ferry. Still, there wasn’t any other vehicles. It was deserted; it was like a ghost town. I had a good look around but couldn’t find anybody or any signs saying anything. So I Googled it and found out that it doesn’t run anymore, but may do soon! Fat lot of good that is to me! “Bar do” ferry, more like “Bar doh”! Ferry!

I had no choice but to follow the Rio Mino up stream to a bridge that crossed it about 8 miles away then it would have meant another 8 miles back the other way to get me to the same point on the other side of the Rio, so I’ve changed my route which might work out for the better or it might not we’ll see tomorrow! After finding that the ferry no longer ran, I was a little deflated! So I didn’t go much further till I stopped.

Bicycle Touring Iberia: Portugal, Setubal To Lisbon, Then Train To Porto | Travelsonabike2

Cycling Iberia, Portugal: Setubal to Lisbon & Train to Porto

My latest bicycle touring update: cycling in Iberia, Portugal. Cycling Setubal to Lisbon. 39 miles. Then, Lisbon to Porto by train. I bloody knew I took the long route yesterday! After looking at my website last night to see which way I went the last time I was here, it was more along the coast and away from that big hill! But hey ho!

I took the ferry from Cacilhas to Lisbon this morning, which I also took the last time I was here. And the good thing was that it hadn’t really gone up very much at all since the last time. It was 75 cents then, and it’s only €1.70 now, and that was 7 years ago! I also realised last night, after looking at my last trip here, that if I was to stand any chance of getting to Santander on the 1st June, I’d have to get on a train. And the easiest place to do it would be Lisbon. I know the further up I get, the more awkward it becomes! So I had a few hours of hanging about in Lisbon before my train to Porto left at 15.39.

Bit of a problem getting the bike on the train (I left it all loaded up). The gap between the platform and the train was so far and high. I just couldn’t get my bike on the train. But luckily, because I was holding everybody else up, there was plenty of people to help! Once on the train, I had to take all the panniers off anyway, as the bike had to hang up on a rack!

It does stress me out a bit using other forms of transport when I have the bike, but only for a short while! The train journey itself was fine, and they even had free wifi! (We really are a bit behind in some ways in England!) I arrived in Porto at about 6.45 pm. I then had the problem of finding somewhere to stay whilst trying to cycle on these stupid cobbled streets!

Bicycle Touring Iberia: Portugal, Odeceixe To Setubal | Travelsonabike2

Cycling Iberia, Portugal: Odeceixe to Setubal

My latest bicycle touring update: cycling in Iberia, Portugal. Odeceixe to Setubal. 94 miles. Another long day today, but then I need to really as my ferry back to England from Santander leaves on the 1st June, and it’s a bit tight to cycle all that way in the time that I have. I might have to get a train at some point; we’ll see how it goes.

Not too sure if I took the quickest or easiest route today, as I ended up going over some big hill and ended up a bit further inland than I intended. I’m sure that’s not the route that I cycled before when I was here. But then who knows, it doesn’t matter now I’m here. There’s been a strong wind blowing all day, and I don’t mean in my pants! Sometimes it’s been blowing across me, then against me, then behind me. It’s been a pain in the arse, really!

The last 10 miles or so along the Troia peninsula to Troia seemed to take forever. There was, however, one or two other touring cyclists going the other way, and talking to them broke up the ride a bit. One was a Brazilian girl who was cycling around the coast to Italy. It did cross my mind to ask her if she had a haircut in her country’s namesake, but I thought twice on that one and just wished her well on her tour!
