Cycling Brittany: Back in the UK

Brittany bicycle tour update: Saint-Malo to Portsmouth by ferry, then cycling from Portsmouth to Bognor Regis. 31 miles. As you can see, I changed my ferry and came home today instead of tomorrow. And judging by the weather this morning, just in time. There was a definite chill in the air.

After getting on the ferry this morning, I’m not surprised I was able to change my ticket; it was dead. There were only a handful of passengers; I’d never known a ferry so quiet. I’m not so sure I want to do the crossing from Saint-Malo to Portsmouth again. It seemed such a waste of a day, and there’s not exactly a lot to do on board either.

Well, I’m home now for at least a month; I seem to have a different hospital appointment every week, and sometimes two in a week.

It’s been an enjoyable week away, despite the weather being a bit wet. And if I’ve learned one thing on this trip. It’s that not all campsites open in May. Total miles cycled this week: 491.

Cycling Brittany: Morlaix to Saint-Brieuc

Brittany bicycle tour update: cycling from Morlaix to Saint-Brieuc. 55 miles. Just because I said I enjoyed yesterday, it didn’t mean I wanted the same thing today. Well, not entirely the same; there was no emergency stop today. And at least there was a campsite open at the end of the day. But it’s been just as wet and hilly as yesterday and a lot windier, which, for most of the day, was blowing slightly behind me.

Getting out of Morlaix this morning was hard going. The hill was so long and steep that I had to get off and push. I don’t know if it was really that steep or if it’s me being useless. I’m pretty sure I never used to have to push my bike, so maybe it is the latter. Either that, or I’m just getting old and past it. After all, I am sixty this year!

The weather has been so bad today that the only photo I took today is the one at the top. And that’s the Mairie in Guingamp. The other photo was from last night in Morlaix.

France, Brittany Bicycle Tour: Quimper To Morlaix | Travelsonabike2

Cycling Brittany: Quimper to Morlaix

Brittany bicycle tour update: cycling from Quimper to Morlaix. 59 miles. I seem to be getting good at doing around the sixty-mile mark each day. Today wasn’t the best of days. In fact, it went from bad to worse. But in a strange way, I’ve rather enjoyed it, which I can’t quite believe I’m saying.

I was woken early by the sound of rain, but thankfully it had stopped when I went to pack up and leave. As soon as I left camp, I cycled up some ridiculously steep hills. And that was to get out of Quimper. Things didn’t improve much even after I’d gotten out of the city, so I gave up following the app that took me down the country roads and took my own route following the main roads. Although they were still hilly, at least they weren’t as steep.

Just before midday, I reached the town of Pleyben, and the rain started. And it didn’t stop all day, or at least not long enough to really notice. It was just as well I was following the main road; I wouldn’t have been able to follow my phone. Those touch screens are useless in the rain.

From Bad To Worse

Not only was it raining, but the wind had also picked up. It was making for a very unpleasant ride. And then things got even more unpleasant. I don’t know what I had, but whatever it was wanted to come out of me pretty quickly. I quickly had to find a bush and made it in the nick of time. As I said, I don’t know what it was, but I’ve been fine for the rest of the day.

Then, to top the day off, tonight’s campsite was closed. And that was after cycling two miles uphill to get there. So I came back down to Morlaix and stopped at the first hotel I saw. But like I said earlier, I’ve enjoyed today, apart from getting caught short, that is.

Cycling Brittany: Le Moteno Plouhinec to Quimper

Brittany bicycle tour update: cycling from Le Moteno Plouhinec to Quimper. 59 miles. It’s been a long day, or rather, it’s felt like it. I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. For some reason, I got the idea in my head that I didn’t have enough time to complete my ride around Brittany.

Usually, when I go away on tour, I don’t have to worry about getting home, or if I do, I usually have plenty of time. But due to my passport not turning up, I’m a bit up against it. (I’ve got to be home on Tuesday, the 9th, for an induction test. I think they send a small current of electricity at one point on my body and see if it comes out at the other end, just like trying to find a broken wire in your home.)

I should have checked in the night rather than just lying awake wondering. But I didn’t. I did, however, check first thing this morning, and I should be okay, even at my current pace of sixty miles a day.

To make sure I’ve got a place on the ferry, I booked that tonight. It’s not as if there are plenty of ferries from Saint-Malo. There’s only one a day, and I didn’t want to miss out. Haha, and that didn’t go according to plan. For some reason, I gave them the wrong email address! I tried phoning as soon as I realised, but they were closed; I’ll have to try again tomorrow. Time for bed, I think, before anything else goes wrong.
