January 2026 Bicycle Touring Photos

Photos from my bicycle touring exploits around the world, which I’ve added to the website over the past month (January 2026). The majority of this month’s photos come from my world tour when I was in Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. There are also some photos from October last year and my ride in England.

There’s no Flickr photo album this month as I’ve barely been anywhere in the past few weeks. Partly due to the weather, but mainly because of my hip. It’s giving me really bad sciatica, but hopefully my increased medication will kick in soon, so I can at least get out on a few local rides. Although there’s no new Flickr album, I have been busy updating some of my old albums.

You can also find photos on my social media channels: Facebook, Threads, Instagram, and Pinterest, which you can view without subscribing. But if you already use social media, why not follow me as I travel around on my bike?

Cycling To Australia: Laos, Kasi to Phonhong | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring to Australia: Laos, Kasi to Phonhong

My latest bicycle touring to Australia update: cycling through Laos, Kasi to Phonhong. 89 miles. I felt so much better last night that I ventured down the road to a concert. Although when I arrived, they were between bands. There was a small funfair, prize stands and loads of different traders selling everything from pots and pans to clothes. It had a good feeling about it if you could get over everybody staring! Have they never seen a white man?

It turned out that I didn’t need to be at the concert anyway. The music was so loud I could hear it as clear as day from my room, which unfortunately went on well past midnight! I was then woken up at 4.30 by that bloody chicken again! Obviously, they never cooked it yesterday!

It’s been a much easier ride today. The big climbs have gone, and so has the asphalt! It’s been a bumpy and dusty day. When I stopped off earlier, I spoke to an American on a motorcycle, and he asked if I preferred all this dust or the big climbs. At the moment, the dust as the climbs are still fresh in my mind, but maybe tomorrow I’ll have changed my mind! By the end of the day, I was black, or rather red, the colour of the dirt here. At least I don’t need to bother with any sunscreen. I’m wearing Factor 50 dust!

Flat Tyres Aren’t Good

I’d gotten a puncture just before lunch, but I couldn’t find it. So rather than phaff around anymore, I just changed the innertube. I can look for the puncture tonight when I’ve stopped. About 15km from my finish tonight, I got another puncture! As it was only a slow puncture, I pumped it up, hoping it would stay up enough until I stopped. Luckily, it did, just!

I had a shower, which was very welcome after all the day’s dust. Before going to find something to eat, I thought I’d repair my two punctures, only to find out that my pump was broken and wouldn’t pump anything up! Luckily, this happened now. If it had happened in the countryside, it could have been a right nightmare! I managed to find a new pump from the garage next to my hotel. The only trouble is, it’s not exactly small, it’s a pump for motorbikes! But I don’t care, it works, and it only cost me £4.

Cycling To Australia: Laos, An Emergency Stop In Kasi | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring to Australia: Laos, An Emergency Stop In Kasi

My latest bicycle touring to Australia update: cycling through Laos. In Kasi. Another early start to the day. What is it with the chickens around here! 4.30 again this morning. I tried to stay in bed and get back to sleep, but there was no way it wasn’t going to happen, so I got up. Anyway, it’s good to start cycling in the cool air of the early morning.

I left the guesthouse and set off up the road. But within half a mile, I started to get that familiar feeling in my stomach. The one where you know that your bowels are about to explode at any moment! And there’s nothing you can do about it! I quickly turned around, cheeks clenched and raced back to the guesthouse.

Thankfully, the key was still in the door to my room. Nobody had been in to clean my room. I hurriedly pushed my bike in, locked the door, and made it to the toilet just in time! The relief was immense! But I wasn’t feeling so good now, so I took myself to bed. And spent the next few hours between the bed and the bathroom! Airing on the side of caution, I decided to stay put for the day. After all, I had my own toilet, and it was a proper loo as well! We don’t want any accidents on the road, do we!

Time To Venture Out

I was starting to feel better by lunchtime, so I ventured out to the restaurant and had a black coffee. After sitting there for an hour or so, Natalie and Vincent turned up and stopped for something to eat. Vincent was feeling a lot better now. His tummy bug had gone. I told them that I hadn’t felt so good myself, and they thought twice about eating! But I reassured them that I didn’t think it was anything to do with the food. It was more than likely to be the water I’d drunk this morning.

Natalie and Vincent didn’t stop for long. They were in a bit of a rush. They were trying to avoid another cyclist that they’d got caught with last night! All he spoke about was himself, and he was pretty dull with it! An hour after Natalie and Vincent left, I saw the cyclist they talked about come through. I knew it was him from their description, so I hid behind a pillar just in case!

I sat in the restaurant for the rest of the afternoon. It’s a busy place, with coachloads of Chinese tourists stopping off on route to Vientiane. I watched the chef pluck and portion up a chicken. I hope it’s the one that woke me up this morning! Later on, I tried something to eat, along with a beer, and they seemed to have stayed in! Hopefully, I’ll be okay to move on tomorrow.

Cycling To Australia: Laos, Kiu Kacham To Kasi | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring to Australia: Laos, Kiu Kacham to Kasi

My latest bicycle touring to Australia update: cycling through Laos, Kiu Kacham to Kasi. 59 miles. Not a lot of sleep last night. I had to share my room with a female! After checking in and securing my bike, I went for a shower. When I returned from my shower, I saw her in all her naked glory, sitting there waiting for me. Unfortunately, it was a spider! And the biggest spider I’d ever seen! It may not have been female, but hey, it got you thinking!

Mountains
Spectacular scenery

There was no way I was going to spend the night with that thing in my room, so I tried to get it. I was too scared to catch it with my hands, so I threw a blanket over it! She was too quick and ran underneath the bed. Tentatively, I pulled the bed out, but she’d gone, vanished! I put the bed back and went out for something to eat. What else could I do?

Now Where Are You

After eating supper, I returned to my room and resumed the search for that spider! But she was nowhere to be seen. I went to bed and wrapped the bedsheets as tightly as possible around me. There was no way it was going to get into my bed! I lay awake for a while, waiting for the spider to appear, but I must have drifted off. Because the next thing I knew, it was 4.30 am, and there was some cockerel crowing outside my room!

The guesthouse owner came to my room, so I showed him a picture of the spider. He looked a little worried and stepped out of the room! Maybe I should have been a bit more concerned! I hope it’s not stowed away somewhere in my bags! I never did see that spider again.

Time To Leave

After that bloody cockerel woke me up so early, I was all set to hit the road early, but just as I went to leave, I noticed my rear tyre was half flat. I knew that I had a puncture as I’d only just pumped it up the previous night. After fixing the tyre, it wasn’t quite as early. And the restaurant was now open, so I decided to have some noodle soup before leaving.

I bumped into the French couple from yesterday again today. Vincent and Natalie had somehow overtaken me, maybe while I was fixing that puncture and eating breakfast. Anyway, it was pretty nice to ride with them again. We rode together for much of the morning and stopped to eat lunch together. Vincent wasn’t feeling so good, so they decided to find a guesthouse where we ate.

I pushed on for another 40 km, knowing it was mainly downhill. Although there was one steep climb right at the end of the day. Hopefully, from what Vincent told me, there’s only one more day of big climbs!
