Bicycle Touring France: Kembs to Strasbourg

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Kembs to Strasbourg. 82 Miles. I’ve now left the Eurovelo route 6, and I’m now following route 15. I must admit that I’m not really one for following designated routes, but that EV6 was excellent. I recommend it to anybody and of any ability! I’m hoping that my new route will be just as good. It’s certainly started out well!

Road through Forest
Though the forests first thing this morning

It’s been very easy riding today, through forest trails first thing this morning, then the rest of the day has been spent along canals! All very flat!

Loads of WW2 bunkers all along the canal today

I arrived in Strasbourg around 4 pm and came straight to the campsite. I knew that if I didn’t get my tent up quickly, it wouldn’t dry out. And it would be a damp old night!

Once the tent was up, I went out for supplies, beer mainly! Upon my return, the tent was still soaking wet, and even after having a shower, it had only just about dried out. The joys of camping at this time of year!

I might venture into the centre of Strasbourg tomorrow morning before I set off. I’ll see how much of a detour it is first! I’ve been here before, and spent quite a bit of time here, so I’m not that fussed if I go or not!

Bicycle Touring France: Montbeliard to Kembs

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Montbeliard to Kembs via Basel, Switzerland. 73 Miles. That was a longer-than-expected day. I had planned on having a short day! I was debating all morning as to whether I should go to Switzerland or not! Seeing as I was so close.

Basel (Switzerland) was only about 25 miles from Mulhouse. Mulhouse was the point where I needed to turn left and head up the Eurovelo route 15 towards Holland. Or turn right to Switzerland!

In the end, I decided to go to Switzerland, which wasn’t the wisest of choices, as it turned out! When I arrived there, it just didn’t have such a good feeling about it. Don’t ask me why, it just didn’t!

Heron by the water
I’ve seen plenty of herons on this trip, but this is the first photo I’ve been able to get

That’s one of the reasons why I never like to go back somewhere I’ve already been; the first memories are always the best! After realising that I didn’t want to stay in Basel, I looked for an alternative place to stay, and found a campsite just outside the city! And yes, as you’ve guessed, it was closed!

Luckily, I’d passed another campsite a few miles back on my way into Basel, which I saw was open. And that’s where I’ve ended up tonight. I might have a rest day tomorrow. My tent and everything was wet from my last night’s camp, as it always is. But because I didn’t stop till late, nothing has had a chance to dry out! And is still damp now, four hours later!

Despite my little detour into Switzerland and cycling an unnecessary 30 miles, I’ve still had a good day.

Life After Sepsis: Cycling France, Dole To Montbeliard | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring France: Dole to Montbeliard

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Dole to Montbeliard. 95 Miles. Well, that was a longer day than expected! It took me three campsites and three hotels before I found one that was open!

I came across my first campsite at around 3 o’clock. That’ll do me, I thought! No chance it was “ferme!” Not a major problem. After all, it was a bit early!

Lovely sunny day

Ten miles down the road, or rather river, I should say, seeing as I’ve been following the river Doubs all day, I came upon another campsite, which, yes, you’ve guessed right, was also closed! Thinking I’d best find a hotel, I went to the two hotels that were in town, but both were closed! What’s the matter with these places?

After another nine miles or so and another closed campsite, I had no choice but to cycle 15 more miles to Montbeliard, where I knew there were plenty of hotels but no campsites!

Stunning scenery all day

I arrived in Montbeliard at about 7 pm, and despite it being a long day, it’s been very enjoyable!

Life After Sepsis: Cycling France, Montceau-les-Mines To Dole | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring France: Montceau-les-Mines to Dole

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Montceau-les-Mines to Dole. 75 Miles. Well, that was an enjoyable ride! It’s been mainly downhill, plus I’ve had a tailwind for most of it. And to finish the day off, I’ve found a campsite!

Track lined with trees and water
Lovely route following the canal first thing

I started the day off where I’d left off yesterday, following the Canal du Central, but after 3 or 4 hours, I left that and was heading across the country on roads. I think the cycle route that I’m sort of following does follow the canal, but according to my phone, it was quicker to follow the roads.

Man on hill
Not a canal or river to be seen

I was back on the canal for my last 6 miles as I rode into Dole, so maybe I’ll be following it again tomorrow. I’ll have a look tonight.

Water, church houses
Pretty looking town of Dole

I even had to slow down at one point today. I was catching up with a big black cloud that was chucking down the rain!
