Cycling Europe, the Netherlands: Ellemeet to Hook of Holland

My latest bicycle touring update, cycling in Europe, the Netherlands, Ellemeet to the Hook of Holland. 37 miles. It’s been a wet and windy day. But luckily, the wind has been behind me, blowing me along.

I was unsure last night if I was going to get the ferry back today or not. But then, when I saw the weather this morning, I decided I’d just as well. And after talking to the lady at the ferry check-in, I think it was the right move. She said it’s meant to rain all day tomorrow.

Rain In The Night

It started to rain at about midnight last night. And I think it was on and off throughout the night. But luckily, when it was time to get up, it had stopped. And it remained dry for the first couple of hours. Then it was that very fine rain. The type of rain where you don’t think you’re getting wet until it’s too late and you’re soaked through.

Along one of the dykes today

I was still cycling along the coast today, and there were a couple of huge dykes I had to cycle over. But with a strong tailwind, I flew over them. I also had a ferry to catch, which only cost one euro. And it was a proper RORO ferry, not some small thing. I always think that in the UK, we get ripped off with this sort of thing. I had to go on a ferry yesterday, which only cost seven euros, and it was a good thirty-minute crossing.

Bicycle Touring Europe: De Haan, Belgium To Ellemeet, Netherlands | Travelsonabike2

Cycling Europe: De Haan, Belgium to Ellemeet, Netherlands

My latest bicycle touring update, cycling in Europe, De Haan, Belgium, to Ellemeet, in the Netherlands. 61 miles. Well, I’ve made it to the Netherlands. Now what? Oh yes, I’ve got to come back to England for a hospital appointment.

Bloody last night. The campsite I was on had plenty of room. But some other cyclist decided to pitch his tent right next to mine. Hey, ho, that’s fine. It’s up to him. But he could have put it somewhere else. I said hello to him, but he just grunted.

It was getting late, or at least it was gone nine o’clock, and instead of pitching his tent, he sat talking on his phone. No major problem, but surely you’re better off setting up camp first. After half an hour, he stopped talking and set his tent up. Great, I thought a bit of peace. No, he was back on his phone for another half hour or so.

Settle Down Man

It was now gone ten o’clock, and maybe now he would settle down for the night. Not a chance, he now started rummaging through his bags, which for some reason were really noisy. I eventually dozed off, only to be woken at 1 am by his snoring! I coughed loudly, which made him stop for a minute or two. But then he started again. This went on most of the night. I’d doze off for a bit only to be woken again by his snoring.

Needless to say, I wasn’t quiet when I got up at five. Although it didn’t seem to make much difference, he’d stop snoring for a while, then start back up.

Pretty tree-lined street in Middleburg

Despite a bad night, it’s been a pleasant ride following the coast cycling in the sand dunes. They were paved; I wasn’t cycling in the actual dunes. And I’ve also had to cross several sea defence barriers.

Life After Sepsis: Cycling The Netherlands, Rotterdam To Hook of Holland | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring the Netherlands: Rotterdam to Hook of Holland

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in the Netherlands, Rotterdam to the Hook of Holland. 34 Miles. Well, that was nearly a disastrous ending to the whole trip! I only booked the ferry the wrong way, England to Holland, instead of Holland to England, what an idiot!

The bobbing forest

Thankfully, the very kind girl on check-in changed the route at no extra cost! I thought the times of the ferries were different to the ones I’d got!

Ships cabin with bunk beds
Definitely lucked out on the cabin; there’s even a TV

Spent the morning hanging around the hotel. It was pouring with rain. And I didn’t have to be at the ferry until 11 pm. Well, that was what I thought!

The Cube house

After spending the morning in the hotel, I then went out to play the tourist. I liked Rotterdam. I thought it was a lovely place, made all the better by the fact that everything is accessible by bike!

Luckily, I got bored with playing the tourist and headed for the ferry. Just as well, it was due to leave an hour earlier than I thought! It was an easy 20-mile ride to the ferry terminal at the Hook of Holland.

Life After Sepsis: Cycling The Netherlands, Arnhem To Rotterdam | Travelsonabike2

Cycle Touring The Netherlands 20th-October-2019

Bicycle Touring the Netherlands: Arnhem to Rotterdam

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in the Netherlands, Arnhem to Rotterdam. 78 Miles. A much better ride today. with no wind and no rain, although it was rather chilly. But I’ll take the cold over the rain any day! I’ve spent the whole day on cycle paths. In fact, since I’ve been in the Netherlands, I don’t think I’ve cycled on a single road!

Man and dog sculpture
Amusing sculpture. Is it Snoopy

How things have changed. I remember the last time I came here, I got nothing but abuse from car drivers as I cycled along the roads!

Road trees
This is how roads should be

But back then, we didn’t have the apps we have today. It was a good old paper map!

Water bikes bridge
It’s the Netherlands, canals and bicycles!

And of course, the maps I use are of the whole country and don’t show minor, or rather smaller towns! According to my maps, there was nothing between Arnhem and Rotterdam!
