Amputation, Maintenence & Garden Camping | Garry McGivern: April 2026 Update

Monthly Update From Garry McGivern

My latest monthly update for April 2026. Getting away, the dawn chorus, garden camping and hip news, all in my April 2026 update. You may remember that I mentioned in last month’s update that I was going to go away the following day. Well, as you may have guessed after not hearing from me, I didn’t. I never even made it out of the gate.

I was all loaded and ready to go. I’d emptied the fridge and had locked the house up. But after reaching my gate, which is all of 4 or 5 metres, I’d had enough. I think loading the bike and sorting things out in the house was enough for me. And I thought, if I’m not feeling that great now, what would I be like at the end of the day? Or even tomorrow morning when I get up. If I can’t cope when I’m at home, or rather just about cope. I don’t think I’d be able to cope with camping. But that isn’t to say I’ve given up entirely, I’ll probably still try. After all, if you don’t try, you don’t know.

Mr Memory

I could always try camping in the garden first and just use the house as the toilet block, like on a campsite. I keep catching the dawn chorus when I get up, which is always something I enjoy when I’m camping, especially in the New Forest. And if I was camping in the garden, I’d hear it even better. After all, once the tent door is closed, I could be anywhere!

I’ve already had the tent up in the garden this month after my last attempt at getting away. I suddenly remembered I needed to check out my Hilleberg tent. After my last camping trip on the Isle of Wight, when it was blowing a gale, I’d left the tarp up. I remembered that the vent cover on the tent was looking a little worn, where the tarp had been rubbing against it. And had meant to look at it when I arrived home, but having the memory retention of a gnat, I’d forgotten.

I was right, the vent cover on my tent was looking a little worn, although it was still water-tight. But rather than wait for it to fail, I decided to order a new one. And what a delight Hilleberg was to deal with. Contacting them was easy, unlike some companies where you have to spend a day looking through their website to find an email address. Or you have to go through some Bot first. Hilleberg’s information was all in clear sight on their website. And after a couple of emails, a new vent cover was on its way to me.

In Hospital Again

Updating some old posts from March 2016, when I was in hospital with cellulitis, I’d written about a man with a bad knee. He’d had a knee replacement operation eight years before. But it hadn’t worked out, and had got infected. And he’d spent the last eight years in and out of hospital. Every time they cleared it up, it would last a while, then return. I heard him say that he just wanted to have his leg amputated. Haha, it sounded like a familiar story to me now. My hip issues have been ongoing for eight years now, although I certainly don’t want to have my leg amputated.

After reading that old post from 2016, which was at the beginning of the month, I decided to chase the hospital up about my hip. Well, I wish I didn’t. They said May or June. But never said what year, but seeing as it’s May now, or rather tomorrow, maybe not too much longer. Although I’ve been waiting so long now, I’ve got to go for another pre-op in a couple of weeks. So I’ll be surprised if I have my operation by the end of May. But you never know.

Hilleberg Tarp 5

Take a look at my Hilleberg Tarp 5 YouTube video. My latest addition to my kit is the Hilleberg Tarp 5. I’ve been using the Hilleberg Staika tent over the winter period, which is a great tent. Unfortunately, I found it annoying when the tent was wet, and I opened the door. The water would drip in on the inner tent. What I needed was something to go over the door of the tent.

After a bit of thought, I decided that a tarp would do the trick. But which tarp? There were plenty on the market of all different shapes and sizes. After looking at the different tarps, I decided to buy the Hilleberg Tarp 5. One for its colour, it matched my tent. And two, I thought the shape of it would suit my tent.

Due to the bad weather, the video was recorded over several weeks and a couple of trips to try it out. But I have been so impressed with this new tarp that I might carry it on all my trips, regardless of which tent I use. You can read more about how I choose my touring gear in my Long-Distance Cycle Touring Guide.

You can watch the video below or on my YouTube channel. But honestly, it won’t be any more enjoyable wherever you watch the video! You can also subscribe to my channel. You’ll then be amongst the first to know when I release a new video.

My Latest Bicycle Touring Tent

The Hilleberg Staika is my latest tent. After all the problems with leaks and breakages I’ve experienced with my MSR Hubba Tour, I decided to buy another tent, yes, another one! Some people like to buy shoes or clothes, I like to buy tents!

After a little research and looking at different brands of tents, I decided to go for the Hilleberg Staika. I already owned a Hilleberg, the Nammantj 2Gt. Which, despite being a good tent, doesn’t really suit my needs. It’s not free-standing, and being a tunnel tent isn’t as versatile.

Looking at the Staika on paper, it ticked all the boxes for me: it was free-standing and had two decent-sized vestibules. It was a bit heavier than my MSR at 4kg, but what’s a bit of extra weight if the tent’s right. There was nothing else to do but buy one!

After several trips using the Hilleberg, I found it didn’t suit me quite as much as I’d hoped. There’s nothing wrong with the tent at all. It’s a brilliant tent. Well made and will stand up to a lot of abuse. And if there’s a storm blowing, I know which tent I’d like to be in. But what on paper looks good, in reality, doesn’t always work out. And the only way to see if a tent is any good is to try it out. Although granted, it’s an expensive way to find out. But as I said earlier, I like to buy tents.

The search for the perfect tent goes on! You can read more about how I choose my touring gear in my Long-Distance Cycle Touring Guide.

Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT

July 2015

Garry’s current tent is the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT. Which he brought in January 2014 after his old MSR Velo wore out!

Garry spent a long time researching and searching the web for a new tent but couldn’t find anything that suited all his needs! Ideally, Garry wanted a tent with a large vestibule and freestanding, but there just didn’t seem to be anything available! You could get a free-standing tent, or you could get a tent with a large vestibule but not together!

One of the tents that kept coming up in Garry’s search was Hilleberg. They have a good range of tents to suit all needs! Unfortunately, they never had one that was perfect for Garry! They had freestanding tents and tents with big vestibules but once again, not together!

In the end, Garry decided that the large vestibule was more important to him. So he brought the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT.

The Tent

It’s a four-season two-person tunnel tent, which may be a little too large and heavy for some people. But Garry likes to have plenty of room to stretch out rather than being cramped up in some tiny one-man tent, especially when it’s blowing a gale and raining outside!

A two-man tent always means that there’s plenty of room inside, and with the vestibule, there’s plenty of room to store the panniers inside overnight.
