World Bicycle Tour: Thailand on this day in 2012

My on this day bicycle touring post comes from Thailand on the 6th of February 2012. Things are starting to heat up as I travel further south towards the equator. The heat and humidity in the Lang Suan district seem a bit too much for me today. It’s as though I’ve not acclimatised to the Thai heat yet. But I still managed a decent amount of miles.

Monday 6th February 2012. Lang Suan to Wiang Sa. 101 miles.

I might have to start wearing long sleeves and a hat! It doesn’t seem to matter how much sunscreen I put on. It’s just not working. I just sweat it all off after half an hour or so. I’m looking rather red and feeling a little sore tonight. Compared to back home, apparently, they’re suffering from sub-zero conditions and snow. I think I know where I’d rather be. Snow would be a nightmare for me. Despite the hot conditions, I’ve still managed to cycle over 100 miles today, just!

It’s quite amusing watching people get out of their vehicles in this part of the World. They all drive Toyota Hilux pickups, which aren’t exactly small. Yet the Thai people aren’t the biggest of people. And they all look to be struggling to get in and out. Maybe they should carry a ladder.

Tonight’s supper was rather hot. It was some sort of soup, very tasty, but, boy, was it hot. Not only have I spent all day sweating, but now I’m sweating over my supper. It was pouring off me, just as it had been all day. But I managed to get through it. Even the chef was impressed. Personally, I think it was a ploy on their part to get me to buy more beer. Ha, they don’t know me. I don’t need an excuse.

Bicycle Touring The World: Kazakhstan, in Atyrau

My latest bicycle touring update, cycling around the world in Atyrau, Kazakhstan. It’s been a bit of an annoying day today, and I could have started to move again after going to the immigration police this morning to get my passport stamped again. It turned out that I didn’t need one. I had thought that that was the case, but I just wanted to double-check. It seems different if you arrive in the country by plane. It’s all very confusing!

Every time I’m off the bike for more than a day or two, my sciatica starts playing up. And I’ve now been off my bike for more than a week. And in quite a lot of pain! I’ll be glad to get back on my bike tomorrow. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I finish my ride and have to return to work. Maybe I’ll just have to keep cycling!

Cycling The World: Istanbul, Turkey To Atyrau, Kazakhstan By Plane | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring The World: Turkey to Kazakhstan, by Plane

My latest bicycle touring update, cycling around the world in Atyrau, Kazakhstan. The day started with a leisurely breakfast in Istanbul. After all, there was no rush. My flight back to Kazakhstan wasn’t until midday.

After saying goodbye to the hotel staff, once again! I left for the airport. Check-in was a little less chaotic than when I’d left Atyrau. But then I suppose it’s a somewhat bigger, more international airport in Istanbul. Check-in was relatively smooth apart from one brief moment. The man at the check-in desk looked at my visa and said he’s never seen one like it before and wasn’t sure if it was a genuine visa! Great, my heart sank. Not only were they not going to let me back into the country, but I’d left my bike and all my gear there. And that would be the end of my ride!

There was no need to panic, and I’d gotten a little ahead of myself. After asking a colleague, he said it was fine, and I was allowed through to airport side. Hopefully, this will be my last flight before my flight home in a couple of months.

The flight back to Kazakhstan seemed a lot shorter, and in no time, I was back on the ground in Kazakhstan, hoping they’d let me back into the country. Which they did without any problem, and even better, my bike was still at the hotel. I’ve just got to see if I need another stamp from the police tomorrow, then I can get back on my bike and on my way to China.

Bicycle Touring The World: Istanbul, Turkey

My latest bicycle touring update, cycling around the world, in Istanbul, Turkey. My last full day in Istanbul, but then I’ve said that three times before. I hope the next time I return, it will be for a weekend break or something. And not because there’s been political unrest in a country. Or because I have to leave a country due to a visa mix-up.

I’ve decided that once I finish my ride around the world, I can always return to Istanbul if I can’t find any work at home. I got asked by so many people if I could take their photos today that I’m sure I could charge and make a living.

I thought it would be a good idea to get a haircut and shave while still in Turkey, and besides, it would pass a bit of time. I wish I hadn’t! The haircut was okay, as was the shave. They usually burn your ears to get rid of excess hair. But not in this barber shop, they waxed my ears. And boy, did it hurt! I will never have that again, and I’m glad it was only my ears. What do women put themselves through?
