Brighstone To Bognor Regis, England | Bicycle Tour Video

Take a look at my latest cycling England video, Brighstone to Bognor Regis, posted on my YouTube channel today. It’s the video version of the post I wrote on the 2nd of November 2025 while on tour. After surviving another windy night, I’ve decided to leave Grange Farm and possibly head home. I’m undecided. Which is highly unusual for me!?!

I really need to look at what I’m filming. I went to say goodbye to the farm animals, but they were hiding in their hut, so you can only just about see one of the goats. Once I’m out of the campsite, there’s a nice tailwind, which will help me up the 12% climb up Shorwell Shute. It doesn’t get any easier, no matter how many times I’ve done it.

There’s a campsite in the New Forest that I want to try, and I start to wonder whether to go there today instead of going home. But I seem to talk myself out of it even as I talk about it! I wasn’t in any rush for the ferry until I realised that if I didn’t get this one, I’d have to wait an hour and a half for the next one. Once back in Portsmouth, it’s a nice, sunny ride along the seafront, and the cycle path that runs beside Langstone Harbour is busy with dog walkers. Out of Portsmouth, it’s not long before I arrive in Chichester, where it’s a short ride home.

Brighstone, Isle of Wight Camping | a Day in Camp | Bicycle Tour Video

Take a look at my latest bicycle tour video, Brighstone camping, posted on my YouTube channel today. It’s the video version of the post I wrote on the 1st of November 2025 while on tour. Well, I managed to survive last night’s storm, camped on the cliffs at Grange Farm, just. I was up at 2 am securing the tent. It was so windy that I packed all my gear away, thinking that I might have to abandon the tent and leave.

But now the wind has changed direction, I need to turn the tent, which in the wind that’s still blowing might not be that easy. With the tent facing a different direction, it’s a lot less draughty, and I can unpack my gear. And decide to head into Brightstone for some supplies. That didn’t work out too well either when I got caught in the rain on the way back to camp.

Brockenhurst to Brighstone, England | Bicycle Tour Video

Take a look at my latest bicycle tour video, Brockenhurst to Brighstone, posted on my YouTube channel today. It’s the video version of the post I wrote on the 31st of October 2025 while on tour. Apologies for the rather dark start to the video. As in light, not dark, as in sinister. I hadn’t realised it was so bad. I was in the tent packing away my pannier. But it’s not for long, as I soon leave camp.

The New Forest is full of autumnal colours and puddles. I hadn’t realised how much rain must have fallen overnight. As I cycle through the New Forest, I bump into a familiar face. Out of the forest, I’m cycling on the busy roads heading for Lymington and the Isle of Wight ferry. But I have a change of mind and head for the quieter cycle route instead.

Once I’m on the Isle of Wight, it’s a tough ride; there’s a strong wind, which gets even harder as I change direction and have to cycle uphill directly into the wind. Luckily, it’s only a short ride across the island, and I’m soon at Grange Farm. I now have to battle the wind to put up my tent. Which, being on the cliff, isn’t exactly sheltered from the strong southerly wind. Will I survive the night?

On This Day 2019: Cycling Bognor Regis to Sandown

My on this day bicycle touring post comes from England on the 13th of February 2019. This was my second trip away after recovering from the severe sepsis shock that nearly killed me the year before. And I’m still finding things hard going.

Wednesday 13th February 2019. Bognor Regis to Sandown, on the Isle of Wight. 50 miles.

Well, that was another day that didn’t go according to plan. I was heading for Swanage and was doing fairly well. If you look at a map, the most direct route to Swanage from Bognor Regis is via the Isle of Wight, on a bike, that is. So I cycled to Portsmouth, caught the ferry to the Isle of Wight, got to the island and got a puncture.

Being my normal, useless self, which I seem to be these days, it took me well over an hour to fix. And it was early afternoon by the time I was back on the road. Half a mile up the road, I stopped again for some reason. I can’t really remember why. I might have been trying to see ferry times for the next ferry from Yarmouth to Lymington. Anyway, while I was parked up at a bus stop, an old lady came past walking her dog. Well, he was a lively little thing jumping up at me and wagging his tail, which I didn’t mind at all. He was lovely.

Well, the long and short of it is she could talk for England. And I must have been there for nearly an hour. Which, to be honest, I really didn’t mind; she was quite pleasant. Once I’d finished talking, or rather listening to her, I continued on.

After cycling through Newport, it dawned on me that I wasn’t going to get to Swanage until really late, so I decided to stay on the island. Now that I’d decided to stay on the island, I thought I’d give youth hostelling a go, but after making a few phone calls, I found out they were all shut.

Now What

My next plan was to head back across the island towards Sandown, as I knew there were a lot of campsites around there, and it was an easy ride along the Red Squirrel Trail. That turned into a nightmare. Well, maybe not a nightmare, but a bloody pain. They’d closed part of it off, but failed to put any signs up notifying anybody. So, one and a half miles down one part of it, I had to turn around, go back and find another route.

I reached Sandown but unfortunately couldn’t find any campsites that were open, so once again I’m having to stay in a hotel. I will get to camp one day.
