Cycling England: Brighstone

My latest bicycle touring update: cycling in England, in Brighstone. What a night. I knew I should have left my tarp down last night. I should have known when I was putting it up that it was a bad idea. It was blowing all over the place. And at one point, I nearly lost it to the wind. I should have listened; somebody was trying to tell me something.

After an early supper, I decided to bed down. I knew it was going to be a stormy night. So, best get some sleep while I can. Haha, not a chance. What with the tarp flapping about and my usual sleeping problems, there was no chance. I don’t know what time it was, but it got so stormy, I packed everything away. Apart from my sleeping bag. Thinking that I might have to evacuate the tent at any moment. After packing away, I went outside in the wind and rain to evaluate the situation. And found out why things sounded so bad.

It Wasn’t As Bad as I First Thought

One of the guy rope tighteners on the tarp wasn’t locking. It had got itself tangled up and was loose. But after a bit of phaffing around, I managed to sort it out and tightened it back up. And after checking everything else out, I got back in the tent. An hour or so later, I could hear something else had come loose. This time, it was a peg, which had been pulled out of the ground. I’d only checked it when I was out earlier. But the ground where this peg was was particularly boggy. It took me several attempts to find a firm piece of ground where the peg would hold.

Back in the tent, another hour or so passed. And once again, I could hear something was loose and flapping around. This was getting rather boring now. Out I went into the wind and rain once more. It was that same peg. It had been pulled out of the ground again, along with a great big piece of turf. I decided that the tarp had to come down; the extra strain of the tarp was causing the peg to keep popping out.

That’s It, I’ve Had Enough

So, at 2 a.m., with the wind howling, I had a fight with the tarp to get it down. It wasn’t easy. I kept tripping over guy ropes, trying to hold onto the tarp. Some of the guy ropes had tightened onto the pegs, so I couldn’t just take the tarp off. I had to take the peg out of the ground, which was also securing the guy rope for the tent. I was then trying to hold onto the tent and tarp while trying to untangle the rope. What a nightmare.

Mind you, once the tarp was down, things were a lot quieter, and I managed to get some sleep. In fact, I didn’t even wake up until my alarm went off at 5.45. I’m normally awake and up by 4.30. Just as well I wasn’t going to go anywhere today.

That’s lunch sorted!

I’ve not done much at all today. It took me a couple of hours this morning untangling the guy ropes on the tarp. I was in such a rush last night, I didn’t care. I just wanted it out of the way. I also dried it off before packing it away properly. I then went into the village to get supper and some lunch. And got caught in the only shower we’d had all morning! I was going to go down to the beach, but it’s been rather showery this afternoon, so I haven’t been anywhere.

Cycling England: In Brighstone

My latest bicycle touring update: cycling in England, in Brighstone. Well, I can’t say that I’ve done a lot today. But it’s been enjoyable. Just pratting around, talking to the owners of the site. And the animals!

But at least I’ve accomplished one thing: I know where I’m going. At least at the moment. Unless I change my mind, of course, tomorrow. I had really wanted to go over to France. But with the way my hip is, and with no travel insurance. I’d be a bit silly. Nothing would probably happen, but there’s always that one occasion when something does.

My Plan, Maybe!

No, as it stands at this time, I’m heading towards Anglia. I’ve not been that way for a while. Ideally, I would have liked to head further north, but given the time I’ve got, Anglia might be it. But you never know. I might suddenly be able to do the sort of mileage I used to do.

I did ponder about heading west, but there’s a lot of hills that way. And besides, I think the wind is due to change direction, making it a hard ride home.

It was a lovely full moon last night. It was so bright I hardly needed my head torch. Although it had clouded over when I got up. But today has been lovely. The sun’s been out, and it’s been pretty warm. In fact, it was t-shirt weather.

Bicycle Touring England: A Lazy Day In Brighstone | Travelsonabike2

Camping on The Isle of Wight

My latest bicycle touring update, cycling in England, in Brighstone. Guess what? I had another lazy day and stayed put. I really was being lazy today. There was no excuse for staying, apart from the fact that I quite like it here.

I was expecting to be in a bit of pain today. As I was hurting quite a bit yesterday and last night. But I woke up okay this morning. I even went for a walk on the beach. And that’s a steep walk to get to from the campsite. Mind you, I did increase my nerve blockers last night, so maybe that helped. And maybe it is my slipped disc that has got worse. Either way, it was quite nice to be relatively pain-free today.

After visiting the beach, I went for a walk around the campsite, taking pictures of the many animals they have here. And that’s about it for the day. Who knows what I’m going to do tomorrow? But at the time of writing this, I’m heading home.

Cycling England: Langton Matravers to Adgestone

My latest bicycle touring update: cycling England, Langton Matravers to Adgestone. 64 miles. I’m feeling tired today. I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night. Last night, all I could hear was some cow (the four-legged type). It was mooing all night. I don’t know what was up with it, whether it was trying to give birth or something. But it definitely sounded distressed. The chances are that I’m not going to get a lot of sleep tonight either. The weather forecast is for thunder and lightning!

Well, just for a change, I’m on the Isle of Wight! Although not at my usual campsite. Apart from liking the Isle of Wight. The other reason for returning is that my hip and leg are so bad at the moment that I don’t have the confidence to go too far. I’m just about okay if nothing goes wrong. But if I had a puncture or had to change a tyre. That would be a major event for me. I find putting the tent up is bad enough. But after saying all that, I’m still enjoying myself.

The ride today was a lot cooler. It’s been cloudy nearly all day, and the last few miles were in the rain! Luckily, it stopped just long enough for me to put the tent up, then the heavens just opened!

My eyes are still bad. I’m wondering now if I’ve got conjunctivitis. I’ll get them checked out at the doctor’s tomorrow, as I’m heading home for the night before setting off again on Monday.
