Bicycle Touring France: Tours to Orleans

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Tours to Orleans. 77 Miles. Another day of good mileage. I seem to be getting quite good at this cycle touring Malarkey, and that’s even with it raining all morning!

As I said, the day started off wet, and it continued to rain until well after midday! Because of the rain, I decided to stick to the roads again. I couldn’t be bothered phaffing around following cycle routes, going here, there and everywhere! And let’s face it, I don’t need much of an excuse to go on the road!

It’s that Leprechaun from Ireland again

It was a bit of a shame with the rain today as I passed through some picturesque towns, but it was just too wet to get my camera out! And most definitely too wet to try and use my phone. Those touch screens on smartphones are a nightmare in the rain; you end up deleting things!

The sun did eventually come out this afternoon, but so did the wind! The last 20 miles or so was tough going!

Bicycle Touring France: Angers to Tours

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Angers to Tours. 79 Miles. It took a while to get going this morning. For some reason, I couldn’t find the Loire! Or rather, I found it, but then couldn’t work out which side I should be on!

Road sign
Now I’ve found it, what side do I want to be on?

Once I’d found the side that I wanted to be on, I still didn’t get very far. Something I had for breakfast decided to put in an untimely appearance! I felt as if I was back in Nepal for a while!

Thankfully it was all over fairly quickly, and I was soon on my way, although I’ve not felt brilliant all day! One good thing, it made for a fast ride; I was too worried to stop!

Cathedral

I started off following the Eurovelo route 6, but then spotted a nice road running along the Loire, so I’ve been on that for most of the day.

Hotel de Ville in Tours

The restaurant in the hotel was closed last night, so I had to venture out! Which may not have been a bad thing, going on this morning’s experience!

Nice blister

I really didn’t walk very far, but for some reason, my trainers have started to rub, and I’ve now got a huge blister on the back of my foot!

Life After Sepsis: Cycling France, Nantes To La Possonniere | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring France: Nantes to La Possonniere

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Nantes to La Possonniere. 60 miles. I got checked out by the security guard this morning as I was packing away, who obviously thought I shouldn’t have been there! And who could blame him!

This Loire cycle route is brilliant and so easy, both on the cycling front and for finding your way.

So far, it’s been mainly on asphalt or made-up tracks, and the signs are everywhere. I’ve not needed to use any sort of map; I’ve just been following the signs. Of course, that’s the kiss of death now I’ve said that!

Cycle signs
Why is there an English cycling sign?

€50 last night, €5.20 tonight, what a difference and a much better campsite tonight!

Life After Sepsis: Cycling France, Redon To Nantes | Travelsonabike2

Bicycle Touring France: Redon to Nantes

Life after sepsis and back to bicycle touring, my latest update: cycling in France, Redon to Nantes. 79 miles. Well, I was really enjoying my day, until it came to camping tonight! I thought it was rather busy in Nantes as I cycled through earlier, and I found out why when I got to the campsite.

Castle tree
It’s a tree castle!

There’s a jazz festival going on, which is all well and good, apart from the fact that it gives everyone the excuse to bump their prices up, and when I say bump, I mean more like stick a rocket under it and see how high we can go!

Chateau
Chateau de la Bretesch

After hearing the poor little girl trying to justify the price to me tonight. Telling me about the jazz festival, I thought there’s not a lot of point in trying to look anywhere else! So reluctantly, I stayed and camped.

Man smiling
Crossing the bridge at Saint-Naziere

Now, what you have to remember is that this is not just any ordinary campsite; this is a 5-star campsite! And I’m also on a premier pitch, for which I get electricity, a barbecue, sun loungers, a table bench, a TV aerial point and a fridge all in a little shed! And it’s only cost me €50! 50 bloody euros! I’ve paid less to stay in hotels!

How they can justify it is beyond me! But I suppose all the time there’s idiots like me willing to pay it!!

Tent shed bench
This is what €50 buys you! At least Passepartout had a place to stay!

As I said earlier, it’s been a good day, apart from tonight! I started off following the Nantes to Brest canal, then it was onto country roads. The only busy road was when I crossed over the Loire at Saint-Nazaire, and then once over it, it was all cycle paths.
