Bicycle Touring Europe:  Bognor Regis, England to Neuchâtel-en-Bray, France

Cycling Europe, heading for Greece, my latest bicycle touring update, cycling, Bognor Regis, England, to Neuchâtel-en-Bray, France. 62 miles. I have a strong feeling of Deja Vu! I’m sure I’ve been here before! Off I go again, hopefully, I’ll get there this time!

The tour hasn’t got off to the best of starts; it’s been pouring with rain ever since I arrived in France! And I got soaked on the ride from Dieppe to here, Neuchâtel. I was pretty cold by the time I arrived at tonight’s campsite. But nothing that a nice warm shower couldn’t sort out! The tent seems to be holding out now, hopefully, I’ve sorted out the waterproofing. Best I get a move on south and get away from all this wet weather!

Bicycle Touring Europe: England, at Home in Bognor Regis

Cycling Europe, heading for Greece, my latest bicycle touring update from England. Or rather, I’m not at the moment. I’m at home in Bognor Regis. I’ve spent much of the day waterproofing the tent. I bought a wash-in waterproofer, which is what I’ve always used in the past, and has always worked in the past.

And thinking about it, it’s been a few years since I last proofed the tent. Hopefully, it’ll stay watertight now. I finished the day off having a lovely Sunday roast with the family. I’ll try the tent out tomorrow, and if all is well, and I’m sure it will be okay, I intend to return to France on Tuesday. And continue on my journey to Greece.

Bicycle Touring Europe: Neuchâtel-en-Bray, France, to Bognor Regis, England

Cycling Europe, heading for Greece, my latest bicycle touring update, cycling, Neuchâtel-en-Bray, France, to Bognor Regis, England! 58 miles. After my efforts to sort the tent out yesterday, I seem to have made it worse!

The weather forecast for the night was rain, and it certainly did! It was raining for most of the night! As I was lying in my sleeping bag, I thought I could hear the rain dripping onto the ground sheet. But was hoping that the bigger drops of rain I could hear were falling from a nearby tree and falling on the outside of the tent. Unfortunately, my worst fears were realised when I eventually decided to look out from my inner tent.

Yesterday Was A Waste Of Time

It was as wet inside as out, even more so, in fact, as the groundsheet was stopping the water from draining away. It was just ponding. There were puddles everywhere! Luckily, I’d packed all my stuff away in my waterproof bags, so that was all dry. Something I’ve done each night ever since I had to pack up rather quickly early one morning in Spain when I got blown away in a tornado! The inner tent also seemed to save me and my sleeping bag from getting wet. There was some water in there, and my sleeping bag and clothes were a bit wet but not drenched.

There’s more water inside than outside

I decided that the best thing to do is go home and sort the tent out, whether that’s trying to waterproof it again or maybe buying a new one, after all, it is nearly ten years old and travelled over 30,000 miles on the back of my bike!

Bicycle Touring Europe: France, Neufchâtel-en-Bray to Dieppe and back

Cycling Europe, heading for Greece, my latest bicycle touring update from France. Neufchâtel-en-Bray to Dieppe and back! 50 miles. I was up at 5 o’clock this morning, all ready to pack up and go. That was until I realised just how wet my tent was on the inside!

Should I push on and try to sort it out later, or stay here to try and sort it out? Not being able to decide what to do (nothing new there!) I just had another cup of coffee! By chance, when I went to the washroom, the owner of the campsite was there cleaning. I knew he spoke a little English after talking to him yesterday. So I thought I’d ask him if there were any camping shops nearby, to which he replied the only one he knew of was back in Dieppe!

So after another cup of coffee, I decided to leave my tent and all my equipment here and just cycle to Dieppe to get some waterproofing. It’s an easy flat ride back along the Avenue Verte, the London to Paris cycle route. The ironic thing is that when I found the camping shop, it was right next door to the campsite I was going to stay at yesterday! Doh! Hopefully, it’s all water-tight now and will last the rest of the trip.
