Garry McGivern’s bike-ride to Australia-and-beyond Thursday, 7th-June-2012 Fort Collins to Sterling. 104 miles. Tough cycling today, with a strong headwind that’s been unrelenting. And there’s no hiding from it. I think I prefer the mountains that I’ve just come through to these flat prairies.
Despite it being so flat, it’s still very scenic. It’s just another part of this country’s varied landscape. There have been plenty of nodding donkeys in the fields today. I’m not sure if they were oil or gas fields, though.
I stopped in Raymer at the Pawnee station for lunch today, and the two lovely girls working there paid for my lunch. They were only young, and I thought it was really kind of them. They also told me to watch out. There was a tornado warning out for the area. The skies had been pretty black all day, and what with the wind today, I could quite believe it. I’ve always fancied having a go at storm chasing, but maybe not on a bike!
I ended the day not storm chasing but having a storm chase me! I could see the clouds getting darker, and the wind had gotten up even more. It was strange that the black clouds were coming at me from behind, yet I was riding against the wind! It was so dark now that it was more like nighttime! There were loads of fork lightning around, which was pretty spectacular. But I couldn’t hang around and watch. I didn’t want to get caught in the storm. Luckily I just found a motel as the heavens opened.
