Travelsonabike2 France Monday 17th-July-2023

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycling France on Monday, 17th-July-2023. Bognor Regis to Newhaven then ferry to Dieppe. 36 miles I think. My trip computer has packed up once again. I really do need to sort it out properly. You never know though, it might start working again tomorrow. Anyway, the mileage is according to Google, so I don’t think it’s that accurate.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, the plan on this trip is to cycle to Luxembourg, Belgium then the Netherlands and get the ferry back to England from there. I’m hoping that the countries I’ve chosen are going to be flat. Well, I know Belgium and the Netherlands are, I’m just not too sure about Luxembourg, or the journey to get there for that matter. But we’ll see as we go along. I’ve not got a huge amount of time as I’ve got the hospital at the beginning of August. But I’ve still got a couple of weeks.

The Albion Hotel in Brighton with fire crews and police still attending

I couldn’t believe how dark the mornings have already got. It was pitch black when I got up at 4 am and wasn’t exactly that light at 5. The ride from home to Newhaven was nice and fast. I had a strong tailwind. I had to go on a slight detour in Brighton. There was a fire in a hotel over the weekend and the roads and pavements are still closed all around it. I think the fire was out but there were still plenty of firemen and police in attendance.

Waiting at the ferry terminal I got soaked. There was a heavy downpour, which had been threatening since I left home. And of course, at the ferry terminal, there was nowhere to shelter. But typically as soon as the rain stopped they said we could board. The crossing was okay and not as rough as I’d expected, given the strong wind that was blowing. I’ll start cycling properly tomorrow, there wasn’t any point in going any further today. We didn’t dock until 4 o’clock. So I just found a campsite for the night.
