Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in the UK on Wednesday, 11th-October-2023. Crowborough to Waltham Cross. 64 miles. What an enjoyable day, although tough going in parts.
Out of camp and on the road this morning, I had a nice, easy downhill for the first few miles. But it didn’t last. I’ve had a couple of big hills to climb. The worst being River Hill, I think it was called on the way B245 into Sevenoaks. That took a while, as I had to stop several times to catch my breath and rest my legs. I’m sure I cycled up that same hill a few years ago.
The most enjoyable part of the day was picking my way through London, cycling new routes and passing sights I’d only seen on TV. That, to me, is what cycle touring is all about visiting new places.
The end of the day didn’t go quite to plan. I had a nightmare finding tonight’s campsite. I went around in a big circle. But as usual, it was my own fault. I was heading for Waltham Abbey, but the campsite is in Waltham Cross! Luckily, though, I made it to camp and got set up just before it started to rain. I think it’s meant to rain all night as well.
