Garry McGivern is cycle touring Kazakhstan on Tuesday, 2nd-October-2012, in Almaty. After breakfast this morning, my first job of the day was to find another hotel. And seeing as the hotel had good wifi, I thought I’d book online. I’d already chosen a hotel from the map reception gave me yesterday, but when I went to book it, it came back as unavailable.

I started to search for another hotel using one of those hotel booking websites. As I looked down the list of hotels with a room, I came across my hotel. That’s a bit strange, I thought. They told me there weren’t any rooms available. Not to worry, I quickly booked the hotel for another two nights.

Pleased with my work, I went downstairs to reception to confirm the booking and see if I’d have to change rooms. The girl on reception looked on the system but couldn’t find it. I was puzzled so I showed her the email confirmation. She looked, smiled and said it’s not this hotel. That’s the Astana; we’re the Astana international! What an idiot! But as it turned, they’d had a cancellation and now had a room for me. So I cancelled the other hotel and stayed put. What phaff!

Please Donate

Don’t forget the main reason behind my ride. I want to raise as much money for cancer research charities as possible. After my wife, Josie, died of breast cancer in 2007, aged only 42. Even the smallest donation helps. You can donate to Cancer Research UK or the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation. Click on either one to donate. Every little bit helps to rid the world of this cruel disease.
