Tuesday 9 September. Doncaster to Heighington, Durham. 90 miles.

Nice fast ride today, really surprised how flat it’s been although I think it might change tomorrow! I was expecting and hoping to finish nice and early today. I’d decided that I was going to stop in Darlington tonight and was making really good progress, which as I said earlier I was surprised at the flatness I also had a nice tail wind. I got to Darlington at about 4pm but unfortunately all the hotels were full or at least the ones I asked in were! Giving up on Darlington I sort of resigned myself that I might have to camp wild, (I couldn’t see anything nearby on the map!) As I cycled along I saw a sign for some hotel in a castle and pulled over to see if I could find a phone number just to see how expensive it would be, as I pulled over, which just happened to be next to a pub I noticed a sign saying camping! I immediately went in the pub to enquire and saw the landlady, she told me that yes they do take tents but there’s no toilets and no water! Fine by me I was expecting to camp wild anyway but at least I had a pub I could sit in for the night! Turns out that the landlady and her husband have only just taking over the place after it had been closed for several months, the landlady was pleasant enough and so was her husband but I think he liked to drink a bit too much, he stank of drink right from the moment I arrived and I could tell from the way he acted he’d had a few and by 8 o’clock he’d gone to bed! Probably not the best sort of person to run a pub I think it’s more of a lifestyle for him than a business! But I wish them good luck and hope it works out for them!
