Bike-Ride to Australia-and-Beyond 20th-June-2012

Garry McGivern’s bike-ride to Australia-and-beyond Wednesday, 20th-June-2012 Rantoul to Lebanon. 106 miles. Long day today, making up for my short day yesterday. Made a little later by the fact that I lost another hour. I’m now on Eastern Standard Time, my last time zone in the US.

Am I near the track?

I stopped off at a McDonald’s for lunch and talked to a group of old people. They’d been meeting in McDonald’s every week since the 1960s! I couldn’t quite get my head around that. I always associate McDonald’s with younger people. Forgetting that McDonald’s has been around in the US a lot longer than in the UK, they would have grown up with it. They were lovely people, and I must have spent a good hour talking to them. One even gave me some of her homemade cake.

I tried eating at an “Arby’s” tonight, thinking it was more of a restaurant rather than fast food. It wasn’t. They sold beef rolls, which weren’t really filling. It was just a bit posher than a McDonald’s! I just as well finish off the evening with a KFC, then I’ll have eaten at all the fast food outlets today!

Don’t forget the main reason behind my ride. I want to raise as much money for cancer research charities as possible. After my wife, Josie, died of breast cancer in 2007, aged only 42. Even the smallest donation helps. You can donate to Cancer Research UK or the Australian National Breast Cancer Foundation. Click on either one to donate. Every little bit helps to rid the world of this cruel disease.
