Campsite Cooking YouTube Video 18th-May-2024

Cooking on a camp stove

Garry’s campsite cooking video was published on YouTube today, the 18th-May-2024. Today, Garry’s cooking cabbage and rice, which might not sound very nice, but take it from me: it tastes delicious. Garry’s camping in the New Forest for a few days, cooking another of his favourite one-pot campsite meals. They are the same meals Garry cooks at home. It’s just a little more challenging cooking in a tent on a tiny camping stove.

Bear in mind when watching the video that it’s not made in the comfort of a proper kitchen. It’s recorded live in the field. Or rather in Garry’s tent in the New Forest. And as Garry has always said, just because you’re camping, it doesn’t mean you can’t eat well. It just takes a little more effort.

You can watch the video below or on Garry’s YouTube channel. But honestly, it won’t be any more enjoyable wherever you watch the video! You can also subscribe to his channel. You’ll then be amongst the first to know when Garry releases a new video.

Travelsonabike2 Holland This Day 17th-May-2010

Windmill

This week’s Travelsonabike2 bicycle touring on this day post comes from The Netherlands on the 17th-May-2010, and I’m in Holland on my way to Italy, having a nightmare trying to navigate the cycle paths.

There is a more embellished version of this post, along with all the posts from my ride to Italy, in my “Travels on a Bike 2 Italy” tour book available to buy from Amazon.

Monday 17th May 2010. De Haan, Belgium to The Hook of Holland, Holland. 118 Miles.

It rained overnight, which kept me awake for a while. But when it was time to get up, it had stopped, and the sun was shining.

I crossed the border into Holland this morning, not that I would have known it! I only realised when I caught sight of a ridiculously small sign. That was more fitting to a sign you’d see entering a small village.

There are even more cycle paths here. Unfortunately, they don’t follow the roads, which is a big problem for me. The signs on the cycle routes tend to give you the name of the next village, which would be fine if I knew where that village was. Villages aren’t marked on my maps. According to my map, there’s only a handful of towns between De Haan and the Hook of Holland. So telling me that so and so is only 3kms away is no good. I need to know where the next big town is.

I cycled on a few of these routes but found it all too frustrating. Not knowing where I was or if I was even going in the right direction. I had to keep stopping and asking for directions. Thankfully, most people speak good English.

Maybe they’re not so cycle friendly after all

Eventually, I gave up on the cycle routes and went back to cycling on the road, where I knew where I was going. That didn’t go too well, either. I’ve never had so much abuse from motorists or anybody else. They were shouting, they were beeping. And I was a little surprised, considering they’re such a cycle-friendly nation. But with such a good cycle network, there’s no need to be on the road as long as you know where you’re going. I think I’d just as well throw my map away!

Because I’ve had to stick to cycle paths, It’s been a long day, zig-zagging between towns, and I didn’t finish until nearly 8 p.m. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better.

Travelsonabike2 YouTube Video 16th-May-2024

Small boats on the water Bicycle Touring Video 16th-May-2024

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 YouTube video, Bicycle Touring England 6th May 2024, was posted on his YouTube channel today, the 16th-May-2024. After his weekend on the Isle of Wight, it’s time for Garry to cycle across the island and catch the ferry. On his way, he stops to look at some lambs and dithers, wondering which route to take.

Once he’s sorted his route out, he changes his mind about how he’s going to get off the island. Garry spotted a new cycle route when he was in Fishbourne the other day and decides to try it out today. It’s a cycle route to Ryde, where he can catch the Fastcat instead. Unfortunately, just after deciding to take this new route, it started to rain. And remained wet for the rest of the ride home.

Travelsonabike2 YouTube Video 15th-May-2024

Passenger ferry in port Bicycle Touring Video 15th-May-2024

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 YouTube video, Bicycle Touring England 4th May 2024, was posted on his YouTube channel today, the 15th-May-2024. Garry’s on the Isle of Wight, ready for the traditional Isle of Wight bike ride. Today, he’s heading off to the other side of the island to meet everybody else arriving on the Portsmouth to Fishbourne ferry.

Garry leaves his campsite in plenty of time to ride across the island to Fishbourne. There’s a possible road closed on his route. But after finding the road was now open, he found himself with plenty of spare time. After arriving in Carisbrooke, he decides to go on a detour to see the castle, which, unusually for Garry, involves him cycling up a hill. Although, he is travelling light without his panniers after leaving his gear at the campsite in Brighstone.
