Garry McGivern’s cycle touring videos of India were posted on his YouTube channel on the 29th-October-2016. Cycling uphill somewhere on the road between Dhule and Sendwa, even the lorries find it a bit of a struggle!

You can watch the videos below or on Garry’s YouTube channel. But honestly, they won’t be any more enjoyable wherever you watch them! You can also subscribe to his channel. You’ll then be amongst the first to know when Garry releases a new video.

Travelsonabike2 India Saturday 29th-October-2016

Arriving in Lucknow.

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in India on Saturday, 29th-October-2016. Kanpur to Lucknow. 53 miles. A very short day today, although sometimes I find them harder. I think it’s that thing of knowing where I’m going to stop. It seems to make the day drag. That’s why I’m always better off not knowing where I’ll end up! Of course, I usually have a rough idea of where I’ll end up, but it’s never a certainty!

If I could get on it!

The ride into Lucknow this afternoon was the usual chaotic nightmare made even worse because they’re building an elevated metro line which ran my whole route into the city.

I might stop here for two nights as the wifi last night wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, and I never achieved everything I wanted. So, yep, you’ve guessed it. Having a strong internet signal means more boring videos are on their way! I also need to look at a time scale for flying home, as my sabbatical in Dhule has thrown me completely out! Plus, it’s Diwali tomorrow, so it might be good to stay put and take part in the festivities. Or maybe just watch!

Travelsonabike2 India Friday 28th-October-2016

Bhognipur.

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in India on Friday, 28th-October-2016. Orai to Kanpur. 69 miles. I got a good night’s sleep last night, possibly because I had such a tough day yesterday, on top of little sleep. Or it may have been down sleeping in my own bedding. Either way, I wasn’t grumpy today.

If you remember, I said I might put my tent up in my room yesterday because the guesthouse wasn’t the cleanest. Or rather, to be fair to the guesthouse, the general cleanliness of the place wasn’t that bad. It was the bed that I took issue with. It was minging. I think the floor was cleaner than the bed. At least that got washed! Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough room to put my tent up. So, instead, I put my groundsheet on the bed and slept in my sleeping bag on top of that. I was still cautious about lying on the bed. But at least with my groundsheet, I was relatively isolated from the bed and all its bugs!

The roads were a lot better today, and I had a fast ride into Kanpur, although, for the last twenty-five miles or so, the road was hectic, even by my standards! I was on a six-lane highway, with all the chaos of the smaller roads. Apart from the traffic, cows, goats, and people were coming at me from every direction!

It’s Bognipur!

I’m staying in a nice Western-style hotel with good internet tonight, so at least I can see what’s happening outside India. Although I’m probably better off not knowing.

I had a little walk around Kanpur tonight, blimey it was busy! It might have been down to Diwali, the festival of lights this weekend, one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus. It symbolises how good (light) will always win over evil (darkness).

Travelsonabike2 India Thursday 27th-October-2016

Lunch break.

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in India on Thursday, 27th-October-2016. Jhansi to Orai. 70 miles. It’s been a hard day of cycling today. The roads have been pretty awful, with potholes, ruts and ribbing, but I can’t complain too much. It’s the first time I’ve had a bad road that’s gone on for any distance on this trip! The other thing that’s made it a tough ride is a strong headwind that just wouldn’t go away. Despite the wind and rough roads, I think another reason struggling so much today is that I didn’t sleep very well last night. And I’m wondering if it’s side effects from my steroids, and it’s making me an insomniac!

The scenery hasn’t been exactly enthralling today. It’s been flat, hence why I couldn’t get away from the wind. And for the most part, I’ve been surrounded by rice fields that were just starting to flood before planting the rice.

Not A Good Start To The Day

With little sleep last night, I didn’t wake up in the best of moods, which was made worse when I checked out of my hotel. As I went to check out, I had to pay my food bill from the previous night, which they tried to charge me double! Not only did the manager try and charge me double, but he also added a service charge. I know I ate in my room, but that was only because they said the restaurant was closed and insisted I eat in my room.

The manager was adamant that that was the price even though I pointed to the price printed on the menu, which was the lower price! And he was the one who insisted I ate in my room last night! In the end, I just paid. I really couldn’t be bothered. After all, it was only three pounds. It was just the principal! The hotel “Highway” should be renamed the hotel “Highway Robbery!”

Mr Grumpy

As I was in a bad mood today, everything was annoying me. The continuous traffic, the constant blasting of horns, people cutting me up and people on mopeds that ride alongside but don’t say a word. All these things don’t usually wind me up, but today, because I was grumpy, it was! I had one moped alongside for half an hour or so today. I nearly told him where to go! He was very annoying.

Guesthouse
My guesthouse for the night

Still, all is okay now. I’m in a little guesthouse with my bottle of Pepsi and bottle of water! It’s certainly not the cleanest of places. I might even put the tent up in the room. It’s that bad, but at least it’s a room for the night!

One change of scenery this morning when the above fort appeared out of nowhere. But then it was back to rice fields.
