Garry McGivern’s January-2024 Update

January-2024 Update Garry McGivern’s regular monthly update. And you thought you’d heard the last of me for a while. Wrong, I’d already written some of this before I decided to go away last weekend. Well, it’s been a good month on the cycling front, with cycling trips to Wiltshire, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Kent and East Sussex. It’s been a busy month. And, of course, in between, I’ve had my regular hospital visits.

I’ve been asked why I’m going away so much in the depths of winter when the weather is hardly confluent to camping. There are a couple of reasons. Looking back over the years for my on this day post, I noticed that I haven’t been to many places in January. (there’s a reason for that, it’s called winter!) So, I thought it was a good excuse to go away, even if it was only in England. The other reason is my myelopathy. The sad truth is that it won’t get any better, and at best, I can just hope to stay at my current level. So I’d best get on my bike and make the most of things while I can.

Number One Again

On a visit to the hospital for my monthly DCM check-up, I was reminded a little of my time in St Richard Hospital when I was in intensive care with sepsis. At that time, they said that I was the sickest person in the south of the country. (How do they measure it? Do they ring each other up and say we’ve got somebody in intensive care with sepsis. But we’ve got somebody with severe sepsis shock who is iller than your patient!)

Anyway, I digress, back to my visit to the hospital this month. I was told that I was their number one patient for complexity. And at all their meetings, I’m always at the top of the list. I’m not too sure if that’s a good thing or not. But at least I know they haven’t forgotten about me.
