Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 to Bognor Regis Thursday 9th-February-2023. Salisbury to Bognor Regis. 80 miles.

Well, I survived the night and didn’t die of hyperthermia! If anything, I would have drowned. Everything this morning was soaking wet. The temperature rose in the night, and the frost that had accended earlier in the evening had now thawed. And I was awoken by the condensation dripping inside my tent. Bloody useless tent (MSR Hubba Tour), the condensation that builds up is unbelievable. I knew my tent wasn’t good when it came to condensation and rain, for that matter! But I keep trying to ignore it because I like the setup so much.

Despite everything being wet this morning, it wasn’t a major problem, as I wouldn’t be camping tonight. I was going to stop in a hotel tonight. I planned to cycle to Southampton and get the ferry to the Isle of Wight. Then cycle across the island to Sandown and find a hotel there.

The ride from Salisbury to Southampton was relatively easy, and I knew the route, as I’ve cycled it several times. I arrived in Southampton and had just missed the ferry, and the next one wasn’t for another hour. Balls to that, I couldn’t be bothered to wait and decided to continue cycling and head home instead. After all, it would have been an expensive night stopping in a hotel. And it’s not as if I’ve never been to the island.

A New Plan

As I cycled home, I passed the campsite at Southbourne that I’d stopped at in the past, and it looked as though it was open. It’s only eleven miles from home, but it’s another night camping. And had my gear not been quite so wet, I would have stopped. I’m now thinking of drying things out at home tonight and swapping over tents. And take my Hilleberg. Cycle to Portsmouth or somewhere not too far away and camp in Southbourne. I want to see what the condensation is like in my Hilleberg. Somehow I don’t think it’ll be as bad.
