Monday 25th May. Setubal to Lisbon. 39 miles. Lisbon to Porto by train.

I bloody knew I took the long route yesterday! After looking at my website last night to see which way I went the last time I was here, it was more along the coast and away from that big hill! But hey ho! I took the ferry from Cacilhas to Lisbon this morning which I also took the last time I was here and the good thing was that it hadn’t really gone up very much at all since the last time, it was 75 cents then and it’s only €1.70 now and that was 7 years ago! I also realised last night after looking at my last trip here that if I was to stand any chance of getting to Santander on the 1st June I’d have to get on a train and the easiest place to do it would be Lisbon as I know the further up I get the more awkward it becomes! So I had a few hours of hanging about in Lisbon before my train to Porto left at 15.39. Bit of a problem getting the bike on the train (I left it all loaded up) as the gap between the platform and train was so far and high but luckily because I was holding everybody else up there was plenty of people to help! Once on the train I had to take all the panniers off anyway as the bike had to hang up on a rack! It does stress me out a bit using other forms of transport when I have the bike but only for a short while! The train journey itself was fine and they even had free wifi! (We really are a bit behind in some ways in England!) Arrived in Porto at about 6.45pm then had the problem of finding somewhere to stay whilst trying to cycle on these stupid cobbled streets! Photo; thought I was in China for a while this morning!

Sunday 24th May. Odeceixe to Setubal. 94 miles.

Another long day today but then I need to really as my ferry back to England from Santander leaves on the 1st June and it’s it bit tight to cycle all that way in the time that I have, I might have to get a train at some point we’ll see how it goes. Not too sure if I took the quickest or easiest route today as I ended up going over some big hill and ended up a bit further inland than I intended, I’m sure that’s not the route that I cycled before when I was here but then who knows, it doesn’t matter now I’m here. There’s been a strong wind blowing all day and I don’t mean in my pants! Sometimes it’s been blowing across me then against me then behind me, it’s been a pain in the arse really! The last 10 miles or so along the Troia peninsula to Troia seemed to take forever, there was however one or two other touring cyclists going the other way which broke it up a bit talking to them, one was a Brazilian girl who was cycling around the coast to Italy. It did cross my mind to ask her if she had a cut in her countries name sake but I thought twice on that one and just wished her well on her tour!

Cycle Touring Portugal 23rd-May-2015

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in Portugal on Saturday 23rd-May-2015. Faro to Odeceixe. 79 miles. Not anything to say about today there’s not really been a lot to see apart from one or two golf courses! I’ve also kept away from the coast as I rode that way before in 2009. and I’m not very good at riding or even going to places I’ve been before!

Relaxing at campsite bar

I’m back camping tonight thankfully. I was thinking that it might have to be a hotel again tonight. when this little campsite popped up, and it only cost me €8! I also found out today that Portugal is in the same time zone as England. so I’ve gained an hour! Photo; relaxing at campsite bar.

Travelsonabike2 Portugal 22nd-May-2015

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in Portugal on Friday 22nd-May-2015. Huelva, Spain to Faro, Portugal. 71 miles. Not such a long day today, which was just as well after yesterday! Last night I literally got to the hotel. Had a quick shower and went for something to eat. Before the restaurant closed at 11.30, then, it was more or less straight to bed. Before I knew it, the alarm was going off, and it was time to get up again!

Fairly easy ride to get the ferry at Ayamonte this morning, which was just as well, really. It was a short 10-minute crossing on the little ferry across to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Portuguese side. Not overly impressed with the state of the roads here in Portugal. they are worse than the ones in England!

The one thing you can say about Spanish roads is that they are very good, even the smallest of back roads! As I was making the crossing to Portugal, I was debating as to whether I should throw the helmet overboard. But apart from not wanting to add any more pollution to the seas. I will, however, need it again once I get through Portugal and go back to Spain! After I realised this, I attached the helmet to the bike and enjoyed riding along without having to wear it.

Suppose I better Wear It Then

The only trouble was it was actually easier to wear the stupid thing than attach it to the bike. I don’t have anywhere for it, and it just keeps getting in the way! At least that should please Vicky and Julie! Photo; Passepartout on the small ferry to Portugal.
