Garry McGivern’s Travelsonabike2 Flickr Video Col-Du-Poirier near Monthureux-le-Sec, France filmed on the 21st-September-2013. The panoramic view from the top of Col Du Poirier, France. Unfortunately, the lens on the camera was a bit dirty.

It was a misty start to the day, but once the mist had lifted, it was a lovely sunny day. The first sunny day I’ve had on this trip and hopefully not the last!
It got a lot more hilly today with my first climb up the 433 metres of Col-du-Poirier. (See the video below.) I’ve got Col de la Schlucht at 1135 metres to look forward to tomorrow!

The video, which Garry filmed on his way to Greece, was originally posted on his Flickr Page but has now been transferred to YouTube. Travelsonabike2 England Sunday 15th-September-2013

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Sunday, 15th-September-2013. Or rather, I’m not at the moment. I’m at home in Bognor Regis. I’ve spent much of the day waterproofing the tent. I bought a wash-in waterproofer, which is what I’ve always used in the past, which has always worked in the past.

And thinking about it, it’s been a few years since I last proofed the tent. Hopefully, it’ll stay watertight now. I finished the day off having a lovely Sunday roast with the family. I’ll try the tent out tomorrow, and if all is well, and I’m sure it will be okay, I intend to return to France on Tuesday. And continue on my journey to Athens.

Travelsonabike2 England Saturday 14th-September-2013

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Saturday, 14th-September-2013. Neufchatel-en-Bray, France to Bognor Regis England! 58 miles. After my efforts to sort the tent out yesterday, I seem to have made it worse!

The weather forecast for the night was rain and it certainly did! It was raining for most of the night! As I was lying in my sleeping bag, I thought I could hear the rain dripping onto the ground sheet. But was hoping that the bigger drops of rain I could hear were falling from a nearby tree and falling on the outside of the tent. Unfortunately, my worst fears were realised when I eventually decided to look out from my inner tent.

Yesterday Was A Waste Of Time

It was as wet inside as out, even more so, in fact, as the groundsheet was stopping the water from draining away. It was just ponding. There were puddles everywhere! Luckily I’d packed all my stuff away in my waterproof bags, so that was all dry. Something I’ve done each night ever since I had to pack up rather quickly early one morning in Spain when I got blown away in a tornado! The inner tent also seemed to save me and my sleeping bag from getting wet. There was some water in there, and my sleeping bag and clothes were a bit wet but not drenched.

There’s more water inside than outside

I decided that the best thing to do is go home and sort the tent out, whether that’s trying to waterproof it again or maybe buying a new one, after all it is nearly ten years old and travelled over 30,000 miles on the back of my bike!

Travelsonabike2 France Friday 13th-September-2013

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in France on Friday, 13th-September-2013. Neufchatel-en-Bray to Dieppe and back! 50 miles. I was up at 5 o’clock this morning, all ready to pack up and go. That was until I realised just how wet my tent was on the inside!

Should I push on and try and sort it out later or stay here to try and sort it out? Not being able to decide what to do (nothing new there!) I just had another cup of coffee! By chance when I went to the washroom the owner of the campsite was there cleaning. I knew he spoke a little English after talking to him yesterday. So I thought I’d ask him if there were any camping shops nearby, to which he replied the only one he knew of was back in Dieppe!

So after another cup of coffee, I decided to leave my tent and all my equipment here and just cycle to Dieppe to get some waterproofer. It’s an easy flat ride back along the London to Paris cycle route. The ironic thing is that when I found the camping shop it was right next door to the campsite I was going to stay at yesterday! D’oh! Hopefully, it’s all water tight now and will last the rest of the trip.
