Travelsonabike2 Thursday 16th-March-2023

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in the UK Thursday, 16th-March-2023. Salisbury to Devizes. 61 miles. That was another great day; I could get into this cycle touring malarkey!

I had a dry night, last night I didn’t wet the bed! Of course, I didn’t. I meant a dry night, as in the tent didn’t leak or drip with condensation. I’m very happy with my new tent so far.

After breaking camp this morning, I set off for Bradford-on-Avon. I’d already decided that I was going to camp the night here in Devizes. But to cycle direct from Salisbury, it’s only about 30 miles, way too short a distance. So I was going to detour to Bradford-on-Avon first and then head to Devizes. But after arriving in Bradford just before lunch and spotting that Devizes was only eight miles away, I decided to go to Bath via the Kennet and Avon canal cycle path.

Canal lock
One of the many locks I passed today

Well, it’s nothing like the canal paths in France. It’s so muddy and potholed. Passepartout and I were covered in mud by the time we reached Bath. Despite the mud and the fact that it was hard going, it was still enjoyable. After arriving in Bath, I decided that I didn’t really want to be there and turned around. And headed back down the canal to tonight’s campsite. Annoyingly it started to rain two miles from my finish today. And it kept raining until I’d put the tent up, and then it stopped!

I’m not sure how accurate today’s mileage is; my cycle computer packed up, so I’ve got the distance from Google.
