World bicycle-tour video Asia another YouTube/Flickr video. AWhile cycling across the USA, Garry decided to turn his bike ride into an around the world bicycle ride. But after missing out Iran and Pakistan, on his journey to Australia, he still had a large chunk of the world to cycle!

After studying maps and the internet, when he was able to get it, Garry sorted out a route. Iran and Pakistan were still out of the question! But at least now it was summer, and the roads wouldn’t be blocked by snow, allowing Garry to take a route north of them!

His new route would see him fly back to Istanbul, from there he would cycle to Georgia and Azerbaijan. Then catch a ferry across the Caspian Sea to Kazakhstan and onto China, thus closing the circle, and cycling around the world.

He had planned to fly to Turkey from America. But after being knocked off his bike just outside of New York, decided to fly home and sort out the visa’s he required from home. Especially as Garry would have had to cycle to Washington, where the embassies were!

Back in the Saddle

After a couple of weeks at home in England, Garry had obtained the required visa’s. And also felt fit enough to get a flight to Turkey. After two nights in Istanbul, Garry set off for Georgia, but he wasn’t happy! He wasn’t feeling very safe and was on edge all the time! Fearing, he would be knocked off again! Thankfully, though after a week, Garry was feeling safe again, and started to enjoy himself once more!

Snow certainly wasn’t a problem, far from it, it was the temperature! On many days Garry would have to endure temperatures of 40 degrees plus! And whilst the sun wasn’t as intense as it had been in Australia, it was still hard going! Two weeks after leaving Istanbul Garry arrived in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he would catch a boat to Kazakstan.

Man on bike

World bicycle-tour video The USA another YouTube/Flickr video, showing some of the photos and videos Garry took on the American leg of his bike ride.

After reaching Australia, and cycling the 4000-miles from Perth to Brisbane, Garry was supposed to finish his bike ride and fly home. But feeling that flying home would be too easy, Garry decided to cycle home, and caught a flight to the USA!

Once in America, Garry spent a few days playing the tourist in San Francisco, before setting off on the 3000-mile ride to New York. What a surprise America was, every state felt like a different country. From the mountains of the Sierra Nevada to the Great Plains of Nebraska. The scenery was constantly changing.

22-miles from the finish in New York city Garry was knocked off his bike! And was rushed to hospital with blood pouring from his head! Garry wasn’t worried about his injuries, he was more concerned about what would happen to his bike! Thankfully, though his bike and gear were bought to the hospital, by the police who attended the accident! And the only real damage was a split tyre and innertube, and some holes in his panniers!

After several hours of scans, x-rays and what felt like every test going, they discharged Garry. Although before letting him go, they stuck some staples in his head! A lucky escape for Garry and his bike!

The following day, sore and very wary of traffic, Garry finished his ride into New York City!

Harbour scene

World bicycle-tour video; Australia, a YouTube video of the photos and videos Garry took on the Australian leg of his world tour.

After five months and 9000-miles of peddling across the world, Garry reaches Perth, Australia. His final country, or what was meant to be his last country! He’s now just got the 3000-miles to cycle across the continent, to his finish in Brisbane.

Garry spent a few days in Perth acclimatising and visiting friends from England, that had recently emigrated there. Before setting off on his journey across Australia.

There was plenty of warnings from locals about the dangers that lay ahead! Venomous snakes and spiders, kangaroos, drop bears, the heat and the Nullarbor Plain!

Thankfully though, Garry never had any problems with the wildlife. Apart from some birds that decided to attack him on the Nullarbor Plain! (he wasn’t warned about them!) The heat and intensity of the sun was also a bit of a problem, and Garry ended up with second-degree burns on his foot!

On the way across there were plenty of long days, having to regularly cycle more than 100-miles in a day, to get from one roadhouse to the next! But what a ride it was and Garry made it to his cousin’s house in Brisbane in six weeks!

Boats in harbour

World bicycle-tour video Indonesia another YouTube/Flickr video.

Garry’s bicycle ride to Australia continues, and he’s now in his last country before reaching Australia, and it was to be his most challenging! With blistering heat and ridiculously steep hills! So steep Garry had trouble keeping his front wheel on the ground! And to cycle up them required tacking from one side of the road to the other!

The heat was so intense Garry had to wear gloves, to stop his hands blistering in the sun, which as he was now on the equator, was directly above him. And as for sweating, Garry’s never sweated so much in his life! He always looked as if he’d wet himself, and whenever he stopped, there would be a puddle on the floor! The sweat just dripped from him!

But despite the hardships, what a country! The people were fantastic, happy, smiling, and always wanting to help. Every time Garry passed through a village, the children would run out of their houses shouting “Selamat Pagi” good morning.

Definitely a country Garry would like to return to and explore more.
