Cycle Touring England Saturday 8th-April-2017

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Saturday 8th-April-2017. Greywell to Bognor. 51 miles. I was a good boy last night and only had a few pints and something to eat before retiring to my tent at about 10 o’clock.

It was rather cold this morning. There was even a frost on the tent! But it didn’t take too long to warm up once the sun was out.

I was quite surprised how close to home I was last night and I was back in my area by about midday. Although I didn’t actually get home until late!

Once I knew that I was fairly close to home (20 miles), I decided to stop off at a pub I frequent quite often and have a pint! Unfortunately or not, depending on your point of view. They had a beer festival on, so I decided to stay and have a couple more!

After having a few more pints, I decided that I best get home, but just as I was about to leave, some friends turned up and persuaded me to have a drink with them!

And that was it for the rest of the day and evening!

Total miles covered in the past few days 220.

Cycle Touring England Friday 7th-April-2017

English countryside

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Friday, 7th-April-2017. Brockenhurst to Greywell. 51 miles. I was going to go home today, but with the weather being so nice I decided to stay away for another night!

Not really knowing where to go, I headed in a north-easterly direction for a change and have now found myself in a place called Greywell!

The ride-up has been very varied, from the busy roads around Southampton to the dedicated cycle routes around Winchester and then the quiet country lanes that brought me here.

I’ve managed to find a brilliant campsite tonight. I’m staying in a pub garden, and it’s for free! The only stipulation from the pub landlady is that I’ve got to drink in her pub tonight! Really, do I have to? I suppose that if I really must, then I will!! I’ll just have to suffer and do as I’m told!

Thought that I’d better post this early while I still can. The camp fees could end up being rather expensive!!

Cycle Touring England Thursday 6th-April-2017

Poole harbour

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Thursday 6th-April-2017. Wareham to Brockenhurst. 39 miles. What a lovely day again.

I didn’t leave Wareham until 9 o’clock this morning as I knew I didn’t have far to go today. Plus, I wanted to pay my camp fee for the night, or rather, they caught me before I left! To be honest, I was glad because I’ve had a couple of free nights there and I always feel guilty. Although I now wish I never saw the owner! Not because of the cost, that was only £8, more because of what he was telling me!

They’ve decided to make the campsite a minimum of a four-night stay. They want to get away from people just staying for one or two nights as they want to make it into more of a static caravan park! Which I fully understand from his point of view but not from mine! Might have to find another campsite down there or just sneak in late and leave early before I’m spotted!

Not really cycled that much today as I’ve just been pootling along, playing the tourist!

After leaving Wareham, I went to Corfe Castle just to take some photos!

Next was Poole and Bournemouth, where I discovered that you can now cycle along the seafront for nearly 8 miles!

Finally, I had a steady ride through the New Forest to Brockenhurst.

Nearly all day, apart from cycling along on the seafront. I’ve had the lovely, sweet smell of gorse, which smells a lot like coconut!

Cycle Touring England Wednesday 5th-April-2017

Quay at Wareham

Garry McGivern Travelsonabike2 is cycle touring in England on Wednesday, 5th-April-2017. Bognor to Wareham. 78 miles. Decided, seeing as I didn’t have any more work booked in this week, I’d make the most of the nice weather and get away! I was trying to go at the weekend but I had a problem with my email and had to wait for a phone call from BT, which still didn’t resolve the issue. I had to wait for another call on Tuesday evening, which, thankfully, this time, sorted it out!

It’s Spring

I love this time of year. The days are getting longer, the temperatures going up, and all the campsites are starting to open.

Wightlink ferry
The Isle of Wight ferry going the other way

It seemed like a really long day today, which was mainly because of the route I took, which was via the Isle of Wight. You waste 90 minutes sitting on ferries, and now that the Yarmouth to Lymington ferry is only hourly, it’s even worse. Especially when you just miss one, as I did!

Apart from taking so long to get here, it’s been a really lovely spring day, and the sun has shone all day.
